I have good news for those of you that have been waiting on the arrival of our 71-72 gas filler grommet. I just received the prototype of our and I must say it is perfect!!! These turned out just like we wanted and I gave our approval for the first limmited production run!! Should have them in a few weaks. Soon after it becomes their turn in line to produce. WES

Hey Wes, congrats on a great product, like I said in the earlier thread, I would like 2 of them when you get them in. Also, why did they create the special 71/72 style? Was it do to the different style gas tank? Trevor

We did some arm twisting with our manufacturer and the price should be $9.95. It was a bit of a struggle because they wanted me to buy 1000 pieces and I only wanted 250 to start off with...

I do not know unless it had something to do with gas cap interchangability. The 71/72 tanks are vented and the 67-70 were not. They may not have wanted someone to be able to mistake a vented cap for one that was not. WES

Wes, these are the ones that are made from a better compound aren't they? They won't crack within a year of use should they? Trevor

These are better than the originals and yes they are made from a better compound. Although we haven't been able to test them for a year on these trucks, other parts from the same manufacturer have been on other new vehicles for many years without failure. WES

The new one I bought from Classic Parts cracked up really bad in less than a year, and it was far too tight around the filler neck...this combined with the really poor quality rubber.
Well this was how it looked after 8-9 mths....I kid you not !!

They sent a replacement for free, but I ended up trimming that inner lip off that you can see in Wes's first pic to take some of the tension out this time.
I bet I'll be buying one of yours before long Wes.

Make no mistake our grommet is not what is out on the market today. The one out on the market today is made from natural rubber and uses talkum powder as a filler. No anti oxidents, no oil resisters, and no UV protectors what so ever. Natural rubber with fillers will not stretch like our do either. I started reproducing these for the very reason that eightbanger is posting a picture of. I have been completely assured that these will not fail like the ones out on the market today. WES

I'm in the same boat with my Classic Parts repop gasket, I'll definitely be in line for one of these. $10.00 doesn't sound bad, you said they'd be a little more but I was expecting worse.

Once they are done, yes they will be. Right now I have one or 2 and may have access to a few more Genuine GM Grommets. (these have been discontinued also) Those are $9.95ea. Subject to change the harder they get to locate. WES

I can't do anything for the repop gas caps though. You might try making your own gas cap seal out of a flat piece of rubber though and stretch it on. The only way, (outside of reproducing new caps) to solve that problem would be to complain profusely to the retailer about them and try to return them. Unfortunately these companies in an effort to stay competative with the Walmarts or Walmart type companies out there have resorted to cheap parts. Quality has gone strait out the window. I have found this out by notifying some of the catolog companies that these are becoming availible. Their responces to me have been if my prices are not competative with what they are already buying, they will not buy them. I try explaining the quality issue with them (by the way they are very aware of them) but they say it would be cheaper for them just to replace the bad one with another bad one. Then the customer usualy figures that it wont get any better so they leave it at that. WES

Bummer. I'm stuck w/a cap that won't seal past 6-months as is or I have to become McGyver & DIY the rubber seal w/something better huh? I'd pay more if I knew the 'extra' was for a cap that wouldn't rot @ the seal so quickly.

By the way, I don't mean to be dissing Walmart here. It is that they are generaly not known for carying quality. They just are more concerned with price of a product at the expence of quality.
I would like to find a company that sells a reproduction Gas cap that was worth a darn!! The quality of those are strait in the toilet. Even Stants are not as good as they use to be, but continue to be the most expencive. WES
