71-72 factory grille surround (how to tell the difference from Repro?)
If a person was looking at a NOS grill surround out of the box, is there a part number anywhere? I know the GMC top bar has a part Number stamped.
Thanks. |

NOS are aluminum. The Repops are all made of steel (to my knowledge anyways....which isn't much )

Re: 71-72 factory grille surround (how to tell the difference from Repro?)
The repros are anodized aluminum just like factory. There are custom ones that are chromed steel for some reason.I wonder how long they take to rust?Ain`t no chrome like factory chrome. There will be a GM part # stamped on the back of an OEM grille. But it could be one of the reproduced/GM licensed ones they started making again a while back.A N.O.S. one would be at least 20 years off of GM`s shelf.

Re: 71-72 factory grille surround (how to tell the difference from Repro?)
Thanks Tim,
I found one out here from a guy who sold his blazer and got it with the rig when he bought it 10 years ago. It has the headlight rings too. Either way, for what I am getting it for, it is worth it. I will know in a couple weeks. |

Re: 71-72 factory grille surround (how to tell the difference from Repro?)
The new real GM are still a little different from the import repops. The aluminum is stronger/stiffer. The GM finish is not very good anymore, especially for $700-800! The GM has dull areas and rough stampings..
.The repops, it seems every run is different. Some are pretty good, but GM fits better. |
