283 and powerglide
Alright, ive got a 64 chevy c10 with the stock 230 and three speed on the column. Heres the question, Im going to look at a rebuilt 283 and powerglide tomorrow. It is still in the guys impala. What am I going to need to swap this in. Motor mounts? custom drive shaft? anything else? If its going to be to much then I could always keep the stock trans in for now. It will be a weekend project since its my daily driver so im just trying to figure this out without getting myself in trouble. thanks guys

it is basically a bolt in if you use the 230 bellhousing and flywheel setup and maintain the 3 speed. same mounts. there are a few little things that you will require such as a ball stud for the z-bar. pilot bushing(there are 2 different sizes on od;about .025". unless you know which one(measure the hole in the crank,precisely, or get both and return the one that you don't require may be simpler for you. they are not expensive)

The Aluminum Powerglide is still used today as a racing transmission of choice by many racers mainly for the fact that it only shifts once, and for its extreme durability.

if you are going to use the p/glide there is a lot more work and parts to locate, if there wasn't one there before. you will have to remove the crossmember under the bellhousing and locate or fab a rear trans crossmember as the is where the trans will mount. you will need all of the throttle linkages inc the frame brackets for such. shift linkage plus strg column unless you install a floor shift mechanism. depends on the length of the p/glide versus the 3spd if you have to alter your d/shaft. need to relocate emerg brake setup?

I knew somebody could help. Thanks guys. Maybe Ill see if he would just sell me the engine and ill live with the three for a while. So really all i need is a pilot bushing and a ball stub(napa I would think).

just ask for the pilot bushing for a 283 p/glide crank. an older experienced counterperson will know or should know. the ones that depend upon the computer for their answers will not get it, so this why you ask for both. ball stud, you may have to go to a place like lmc. napa may have them but I doubt it. it threads into the block. your I6 one is welded into a bracket
you will need new hoses and little things like that,perhaps a change to the fuel line. you can run stock exhaust if you get the crossover pipe with the eng and should hook into he existing, unless you are going to modify it. not a difficult job ron |

thanks padresag. You have been a big help. I am going to run long tube headers(i think the hedman ones) so the exhaust should be taken care of. The engine sounded great with no smoke. It does have a lunati cam which helps

getting the motor but LMC doesnt have a clue what im talking about when I say the ball stud for the z bar. Does anybody know a part number or a different name for this part. Thanks

Its a 64 truck. Not sure what year the engine is. Its coming out of a impala. Can I order the bushings from that website too? Is that everthing other than fuel line and simple napa stuff? Man, I love this website. You guys are awesome. I think Ill do a write up with pictures to contribute to help. thanks guys

awesome. Got my headers ordered from summit and ordered my ball stud, clip, and felt from lmc. This might actually happen this weekend. Now I just need to find out about the pilot bushings. Does Lmc have those aswell? thanks

My truck orginally had a 283 and a powerglide in it. Since you have a six and 3 speed manual you're going to need to change your engine mounts out. I beleive in your case your tranny is unsupported due to your engine being supported at the mid and rear (bellhousing). You will need a cross member for the back of the transimission. you'll also need new linkage and an auto colume unless you chose to go will something like a B&M floor shifter. If you're getting the complete engine/tranny then you should have all the kick-down and other related parts you'll need.
Also, I can't remember for sure but I think prior to 66 the six cyclinder trucks have a smaller radiator that you really should swap out for the larger one used for V8's. Swapping in the 283 will definately make the truck a more enjoyable drive. Good Luck! |

yeah, Im just going with the motor. I ordered everything and it should be a good weekend project. Ill be picking the motor up sat. morning about two hours away from me so time will be tight but it can be done. I have a shop so that will make life easier. Good call on the radiator, I will probably run the inline 6 for a while since it doesnt really get hot in the mountains of NC(mid 80's). I will switch it out in the next 6 months.
