Are you looking for a truck 12 bolt? If so a GM 10 bolt with the 8.5 ring gear is just as strong - in fact, I think it may even have a larger pinion shaft/bearing set up.

I rebuilt my rearend for my 12 bolt rearend for my 68. I wish I would have gone with a 9". It wouldn't have been much more (probably just the cost of the junkyard rearend....and then sell my 12 bolt)

The 9" doesn't use C-clips and I believe the stock axles are stronger. Also, I if I remember right, the axles don't taper like the truck 12 bolt axles do, so narrowing them is easier.

78/79 f150 housings are 1" or so wider thhan a 12 bolt
