Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'
i still gotta cut out a few circles in the rim to be able to wash out the mud a little easier. they will probably end up just all black, or a silver color, i am going to see how good the powder coating guy is first and see about getting the centers in silver and the rest in black...who knows.
rims are about 15" wide....

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'
yes still slowly working on it, snails pase..i have all the rims done and they are fixing to be sent to powder coat....all black. have all bracket templates ready so that i can cut out...should not be to bad to get these all done, just gotta make more time
all in all i have everything here, i just want to be able to start putting all the pieces on and not stop on a side note: i have been doing 8under baseball and that has been taking a lot of my time, should wrap up baseball around the end of july. we took 1st in a wooden bat tournament and that won us our $400 paid entre to another tournament in Longview, Tx. (6.5 hrs away), for a Little League World Series Wooden Bat tourney, so i'm pretty pumped about that! so now more of my time will be towards working on our fundraiseing projects to get this great group kids there!!! later.....

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'
i had a little extra time built up from work, so i took friday off. a buddy of mine offered to come over and help out (he hurt his back a few weeks ago) so i told him sure, but to take it easy!!! so we got to work on these and NOT FUN AT ALL i have no idea how people get these big *****es mounted on a fancy KMC wheels, because i would of destroyed an aluminum rim. i have done 44" boggers and down by hand and they seem to be a dream compared to these. It probably would not have been so bad if the side wall was not 2" thick. you can do it by hand until you get to a certain point then your screwed. so this was our answer, to get them on as much as we could by hand and press it in with a little help. after about a total of 3.5hr battle of bad ideas and a lot of and we got one on! the next one took about an 1.5--2hrs because we learned from the first, so we had a rhythm going . then we could not get the beads to take so it looks like tubes are going to be the answer because i was done messing with them. i got two more to do and i have to get tubes which are about $80 a tire so little by little i'm moving ahead
my overall answer; get two piece rims or find a Co-op that can do tractor tires.....cause i found out my Co-op stopped and sold all there machines months ago ..........go figure

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'
those are a pain...but i can tell you one thing worse, low profile skid steer tires really suck, even with a tire machine!

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'
i am taking your average 205 and having a shop machine me a front piece (kind of an experiment) so that i can do a fixed yoked on the 205 and a slip yoke off the back of the th400. this way i can pull the Tcase back and put a small drive line between the tranny and tcase and then go from the tcase to the axels.
i am in the works of trying to sell some toys because i may say F the hole deal 205above and just get a PRO FAB full time 4x4 tcase and go from there.... process has been next to none...haveing no luck with tires and have been just burnt out on the whole project, also the $$$$ has been the other issue...life happens....but any who i'm not selling and not giving up so it will be there sometime..... its a toy not a priority....

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'
from what i understand yes. they are a solid piece of equipment BUT they are a bit bigger and heavier. i have seen guys run these and they work well in the mud and playing around. if you can get your hands on one i would. it would get you going till you may want to upgrade.
what are your overall plans??? my theory is you can have all the motor in the world but its the gear ratio threwout the entire setup that makes it the best. thats why i lean towards the pro fab or SCS case. you can switch out the gears for different events or pits......but with that comes cost oh and welcome to the board alot of great info is on here. i might not be making much progress but i still read up to learn a little bit more everyday!

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'
From my experience the Rockwell T-221's aren't as strong and are a lot harder to get parts for. Divorced 205's with RH drop came in International trucks and Scouts, as well as some older dodges in the late 60's and earlier 70's.
Nvrsatisfied, I know all too well how bad those tires suck to mount. My Dad and I mounted my Michelin's on the M/T aluminum wheels and it was a long road. I have one more to do because for some strange reason when I purchased the tires I thought I would need a spare. But I only had 4 rims to start out with. How'd I end up with 5 you ask? Well I had this great idea to use a rim clamp tire machine for our semi tires at work. It was going great, I had one bead over the wheel and was trying to do the second. But then, the tire bound up because these do not stretch well at all, and the machine spun the tire and wheel and gouged the wheel pretty badly. It probably could be sanded and polished and not be too bad, but I purchased another wheel to replace it anyway. So now someday I will mount the other one. Probably when I actually have the truck running. Have you used a cheetah to try to inflate your tire? Here is a tip. Mine wouldn't inflate either. We removed the outer side wall, stretched it out as much as we could and placed 4"x4"s or 6"x6"s in between the tire and rim. We let it sit for about an hour, removed the wood, reinstalled the bead and blasted it with the cheetah. We managed to get them all to air up that way.

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'
That's sweet! Got fuel"
I don't know a model number for the huge military rockwell tcases, but the 221 is the same thing in pre 1971 chevy trucks. Mainly 64-70 manual trans applications I believe.
