what rear end do i have?

I cant remember what rear end my truck has but when i bought my auburn it was a PITA, the reason i'm asking is because i have one of those crappy chrome covers, that everyone tells me that are known for leaking, and i want to remove it and put a new gasket and put it back on and try to stop the leak. What are your guy experience with these diff covers? whats the best way to keep it from leaking? I was planning on putting the gasket sandwiched in with silicone on both sides.

Re: what rear end do i have?

Count the cover bolts and teel the parts guy it's a "10" bolt or a "12" bolt or a "14" bolt. That should get you the right gasket. Next, don't overtighten the cover bolts, it will split the gasket. Also, be forewarned, do not ever use a silicone sealer on a gasket. Reason is the silicone acts like a grease and the gasket will shift or break on you. Use a good spray on adhesive made for gaskets. NAPA has it. Jim

God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.

so rtv wont work to help seal it more? I always thought it would help keep the gasket in place.

If it's the truck in your avatar then I'm guessing it's a 10 bolt.

Re: what rear end do i have?

You can just use RTV - no need for the gasket if that's your thing...

Re: what rear end do i have?

rtv or gasket will work fine, just dont over tighten, and when u pull off the cover, set it on a true flat surface and check for warpage from the bolts being overtighten. with patience, u could straighten it out if it needs it.

they is some type of glue that holds the gaskets in place, i havnt used it, but ive heard that i works better than the sanwiching it in rtv.

Re: what rear end do i have?

it is a popular swap mines got a 12 bolt its all good, bastard u joints and other parts can be had for it, you just gotta know what to ask for.

on the plus side its stronger than a ten bolt and it makes a nice addition to your list of "modifications" personally i like the look of a ten bolt under the truck but be happy with your twelve bolt its better in almost every way.
