Cab removal
I've seen people removing the cabs with engine hoists and was wondering what they used? It looks like 2x6 lumber.

Re: Cab removal
I attach a 4x4 post across the long horizontal on my hoist, used some short 2x6 and threaded rod to attach the the post to the bar, and then lift with that. I've done it many times with no problems.
The 4x4 goes through the door openings and I generally work with the doors already removed.

Re: Cab removal
I used 2 x 4's. Worked like a charm. I must have lifted the cab on and off over 20 times. Never had a problem.

Re: Cab removal
I didnt take mine off because they were lined up perfectly. I know a lot of guys on here recommend it but I didn't. I did absolutly no damage to my doors. I didn't have any exterior trim around the widnows either, so that might be an issue if you still have yours on. If your concerned, put some folded up towels under the lift points. for my cab, the lift had to be placed as far forward as possible to balance everything out. It was a littly scary to lift it the first time but after that no big deal. Its pretty cool to see you cab just "floating" in the air.
good luck, brian

Re: Cab removal
If you have wing vents you may not be able to leave the doors on with this method. I used the exact wood contraption that rhodog77 used and it didn't work on my 53. I even tried ratchet straps to keep the cab from tipping forward, but it still didn't work. Then I tried with the doors open so that the wood would sit further forward, but I think it was the weight of the doors out in front that caused the cab to roll forward.
Here's the whole story about what I did.... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=385689 I found that the under dash mounts at each end are very strong. I used them to tie off in front and used the hole that's almost center behind the seat riser for a rear mount. Worked real well for me....
