New parts truck
I have been looking for a parts truck for a while, finally stumbled upon this 89 suburban. Guy posted it on CL and I guess it didn't sell, so he parked it at a buddies house in a barn. I went and looked at it, told him if it would start I'd buy it. He tossed a battery from his boat in it and it fired right up, I was actually amazed. I gave him $400 cash and a new 12 gauge semi auto shotgun (won it in a turkey shoot contest, cost me $0 and it's a cheap Tristar brand anyways).
Now I got me a front clip if I want to do the swap, but mainly I got a ton of odds and ends that I need. Worse comes to worse, we'll use the rockers/floor for my shop helpers 79 swb, although I'm really hoping he finds a good cab soon instead, would be much easier. I got it towed to my shop (wrecker owed me, was free), mainly due to a low tire, no water in the radiator (nor a cap), no battery and the tags were out by a year. I tossed a battery in it, roasted the tires in reverse, stopped, roasted the tires in drive... I was amazed at the power it was putting out for having .... get ready for it.... 300,000+. Plus it has headers on it and a flowmaster, so I know it wasn't babied. |

Re: New parts truck
The only seat left inside is the front bench, the rest were removed long ago and it was a work truck. They even removed all the factory carpet in the back and it had house carpet (shag!) instead. The grant steering wheel is junk, it has a big rip in the top of it (could be fixed by an upholestry shop I bet).
I have a local guy who will give me $$ for the truck as a whole once I finish robbing what I want. He has a "suburban graveyard" and makes his living parting these things out. Matter of fact, he said the #1 thing he usually does not sell on these things is the barn doors and the middle and rear seats. Everyone wants the buckets and console up front, but that's it. I don't think he ships stuff, but you never know. He does reply to emails though, so you could email him and ask. Let me make this very clear here, this is not me, I have met the guy like 4 times, but this is not me. http://tulsa.craigslist.org/pts/1742282434.html At just about any given time he'll have 1-3 of these suburbans sitting and parting them out. Then he hauls them to scrap (after soaking all the seats in water for a few days and doing other humorous things to add weight) for a few bucks. I think I counted 4 front wiring harnesses with computer just hanging, countless odds and ends. He actually has gotten to the last 2 burbs before me when I was looking for one. I think I got this one because I had a gun to sweeten the deal. Can't wait to start taking some stuff off of it. But today I gotta build a pc for the wife here at work, then tonight is graduation and my shop helper is in it so I gotta go. Heaven forbid I wake up early on Saturday (won't happen!), oh well. |

Re: New parts truck
I found where the mice were living. Thank goodness it does not have the "smell". I guess it had not been sitting long enough, yet. So far I've found about $20 in quarters as well, seems he liked to toss them up on the dash for some stupid reason.... I can just imagine some of the rattles that made.
Also am glad I never go around to getting some new front dash speakers, this has a nice set of Infiniti speakers that will do nicely. Might even fab a 6x9 bracket for my cab corners to use those. I still can't believe how strong this thing runs, granted I have not left it running more than a few minutes either. Heck I think I'll use the headers on it, send them out to get ceramic coated and bolt them on to my truck! |
