GM factory mistake, 350 Vet motor in my 72.

I just bought a 72 GMC Jimmy from an impound lot. After chatting with the original owner. He tells me the truck had lots of power. So when he looked at the front pad serial numbers he couldnt find them after he talked with the dealer. It turns out to be a factory mistake. GM installed a 350 vet motor. Per GM. I have not varified this yet.

Has anyone ever heard of that before??

does this make this a rare truck or an odd ball. Im thinking odd ball.

Carb is a Rochester "4MV" Quadra-Jet 4-barrel carburetor. the motor is painted orange.

At the moment im at work, so I dont now what the numbers are. Did the 72 Jimmy's come with 4bbls?

Yes we have "heard" of it lots of times, but so far they have all been inaccurate or an engine that was put in by a previous owner etc, but never actually installed by GM. Not trying to burst your bubble, but a whole mess of people on here joke about the "rare corvette option" blazer/jimmy/truck. Just warning you.

On a 350, yes, the 4bbl Q-Jet was very common.
Not just common, but mandatory. I think the only 2bbl carbs were put on 307's. And i'd say that it's probably possible for the dealer to swap motors at the owners request and dime but not too likely. My dad has a 77 chevy lwb 4x4 that just plain hauls a$$. A peak under the hood revels bone stock engine, stock carb, intake, manifolds, everything. The guy he bought it from insisted it was the original stock engine, I just couldn't believe it so a little poking around under the hood and you can tell someone has been into it, it may just be a cam install but it doesn't take much to pep one of these motors up a little. Stock cams sucked. So what i'm saying is that it's very possible for someone to crack into it and change the cam, especially if the paint looks pretty fresh or if just the water pump and timing cover are painted. Those are dead giveaways.

ok these are the numbers ive gotten.

RT head. 3973487X date K 3 1.

LT head. 3973487x date k 4 1.

Manifold 6263751

Rochester Q jet 17054927

Front pad. V11 I 6 TDG

the manifold gives it away. Its a 200hp 350, I can reach the block number.

I could use some help with the engine number on the front pad. thanks

Pretty sure mine was a corvette 350 too. Crossed the intake number with a corvette and they were both marked 18436572.

Small block chev is a small block chev. If its in a corvett, its a corvett engine, if its in a truck, its a truck small block. Most vetted just came with regular old small blocks, maybee a bit better cam, its not till you get into things like an LT1. 2.02 heads, SOLID lifter cams, forged cranks, stronger rods and such. Having a corvette 350 means nothing. I have a motorhome sbc 400 in my blazer that will wax a vette 350. Get over the Corvette option. Gm did on ocasion put hotter than called for 350's in vehicles, by mistake, at change overs, or when thay ran out of what was called for. I have a buddy that worked at a GM dealer back when our trucks were new, and he found a few of these. He tells me that the owners of these vehicles, would come in complaining that the engine didn't idle as smooth as his neighbors. So under warranty the would change out the Corvette camshaft for the smaller cam.

as it turns out these motors were in fact put into 72 corvette's. But the rated HP was not much around 200. If you wanted more the LT-1 was the option. So im sure a ton of these motors are floating around.

this guys vet has the same heads, manifold and carb as my Jimmy. So its a plan jane motor.

Engine: Original 350/200 hp. Vin number is stamped on pad and "VO215CDH". Casting 3970010. Heads: Original Casting # 3973487.
Transmission: Original Muncie M-20 4-speed. The VIN number is stamped on the transmission; Maincase Casting 3925661; Sidecover Casting 3952648; Extension Housing Casting 3978764.
Rear End: Original Axle Casting # 3899143
Carburetor: Rochester Q-Jet 17054927--This is not the carburetor the car left the factory with. It is a direct GM Service Replacement.
Intake Manifold: 6263751-Original

On your front pad, the Engine Suffix is that of a truck:

TDG 1972 350 conv,cab 175 4 K-10 & 20
TDG 1972 350 M/t 175 4 K-10 & 20

And it is a Flint Plant Motor (V), and I believe the numbers were 1116, which would be November 16th
