Tranny Info
Since I'm new to the Chevy Truck scene, I thought I'd pose a question to all you experienced gear heads out there. What's the best transmission between the 350, 400 and 700? What's the advantages / disadvantages of each and why the hell don't they have drain plugs and exterior / changeable filters?

They're all good trannies. The main advantage is the overdrive in the 700. It improves gas mileage! The 400 is a stronger tranny and is usually matched up with a high-horsie small block or a big block.

I've seen pans with drain plugs offered for the 350. Does anyone know if and who offers one for the 700?

Th350 is a good trany for mild hp motors but can be made for high hp motors and is lower geared than the TH400 making you faster in the 1/8 mile but slower in the 1/4 mile
TH400 is the strongest of the tranys good for high hp motors this trany is good for racing stock but it can be made better it is higher geared than the TH350 making you slower in the 1/8 mile but faster in the 1/4 mile. 700R4 is good for low hp daily drivers DO NOT try to race it because it will break very fast but you can have this one built up and it makes a good race trany because it is geared very well for both the 1/8 and the 1/4 mile but you will spend up to $2,500 as for the drain plugs B&M makes a drain plug you can put in your self it fits all tranys you can get a exterior filter kit for summit just go to WWW.summitracing.com and you can find both of these.

Drain plug were not installed because GM wanted the filter changed everytime the fluid is changed. It's GM logic I tell ya ...

My buddy is racing his 82 swb with a tired 350 and a rebuilt 700R4 w/ shift kit. He wants my TH350 for racing and I want his 700 for gas mileage, but he has raced the 700 a few times. (ran a 15.07 fairly stock too.) Do you think he's damaged it any? The rebuild is new as is the shift kit.

If it's still running and shifting fine it's okay. My 700R4 behaved better after I took it out once for 1/8 mile racing. I say take the deal!! The 700R4 is worth more.

I checked the Summit website and there is one TH700 pan with a drain plug offered, but it's a deep pan. Has anyone installed one of these and does it fit ok with the cross member/tranny mount?

You shouldn't have any trouble with the crossmember/ tranny mount. The pan's outer area dimension stays the same only the depth changes. The crossmember won't hit the new pan.

I'v got a deep pan on my TH400 there sould not be eny clearens problems and it makes the trany run cooler and last longer
