Roof question

Well i found out that the roof on my newer Cab is toast but its only the outer skin thats toast so i have deciede that im going to swap Roof skin out with the one from the old cab thats totaly rusted out in the buttom part of the roof

but is the roof tac welded on around this?
i know it is taced around the windsheild and in the corners but what about here

It is brazed on the cab corners, but along the window opening it is just plug welded. Drill out the plug welds that should be visible, then cut the cab corner area where you want.

Not that it will help, but here's a shot of it from Mitchell.

Where the cab corner and roof joint are, it is a solid weld. When you grind all the paint off I bet it is a copper color (brass), they used to weld them with brass (brazing).

It will be a lot quicker to cut the pillars and replace the complete roof;we have done this on trucks that had a sunroof;unless you have a new outer roof skin there is lots of work to take a roof apart.

Just my 2 cents, but why not fiberglass the roof? On a large flat expanse like the roof it would be alot easier than doing alot of steel work and fiberglass won't ever rust out and pound for pound it's going to be stronger and also quieter. Living in the rust belt, I use fiberglass wherever I can because of this. I even use it over new metal. The whole floor of mine was sandwiched with glass after I rebuilt the floor pan. Inside and out then I bedlinered it just before I put it back on the frame. jim

1984 K20 350M engine with 465,000 miles. Well, it's finally done!! Almost 2 years of work, but it was really worth the effort. Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.
