230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
Hi all, I have a 65 C10. I'm hearing conflicting reports. It looks by eye that my bell housing on the 230 6 cylinder will match up to the 327 v8's block. ( I haven't pulled the 6 from the truck yet) Does anyone know if this is fact? I have a 3 on the tree tranny in the truck.
Thanks, Dave Last edited by mrdave03; 07-19-2010 at 09:19 PM. |

If it's the inline 6, i don't think it will fit, I have a bell housing that was in my 63 parts truck, and the bolt pattern and starter slot do not line up for the bolt pattern on the V-8 block. I have not seen one for the V-6 motor, so i can't say one way or the other for it. If you want to use the stock crossmember on the frame, you will have to use something like a 1955 year model bellhousing for the V8. If you use a later model bellhousing without the angled mounts at the bottom, you will have to remove the crossmember and make a transmission mount. If I am wrong someone correct me(no offense taken)--I do not claim to know everything

Not to hijack the thread but i am wondering the same thing also. I have a 64 with a inline 6, i want to put a 283 in with the original tranny and bell housing.

It is an inline 6 and I've heard people say they have done it but some say it will not.. so I'm hoping I can get the definitive answer here.

The bellhousings with crossmember mounts were used through the 72 model year. These will always be made of cast iron and will also have starter mounts. 73-up are aluminum full-circle housings - no crossmember mounts or starter mount on these. The GMC V-6 bell is a totally different animal and doesn't interchange with anything else. Ray |

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
I pulled the original 230 I6 from my '63 and put in a small block. The bellhousing definetely bolts up to both blocks.

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
It's too bad certain people will post like they know what they are talking about, when they don't.
That's the only reason you get conflicting answers. Here's another thread I just posted in: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...t=swapping+292 I surely want to swap out my cracked 292 to a smallblock V8. Would really like one more definite answer from those who have done it - not those who haven't and think they know. Thanks in advance

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
A small block will bolt up to the same bellhousing that is behind that 292. You will however have to change the passenger side motor mount bracket. The 292 version sits farther forward than the V8 version.

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
It looks like to me you have confirmation.
Raycow doesn't post bad info, he has helped me many times and has always been right on with his info or comments. After he posted there was still a couple others that said they had made the swap. I would say you are good to go. |

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
Thanks guys,
I wasn't questioning raycow, but more or less trying to ask people to not post what they don't know. It's frustrating when you get conflicting info. I try to always search before I post, and so many threads with some saying it won't work and some saying it will. Now I need to go find a V8 and junk the cracked 292 block. Thanks again.

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
I just changed from a V8 to a 292. The 292 passenger side mount seems to be a bit stubbier than the V8 and the angle of the motor mount is different. I've tried looking up the perch in my GM parts book, but since it was riveted to the frame, there's no part listing as replacement frames were ordered according to the VIN number.
I reserve the right to be wrong The following information as it is based solely on a personal experience and observation, not on repetitive swapping of V8's and Inline 6's, nor have any factual GM part numbers been quoted to back this claim. No person or animal has been hurt in the typing of the message. LOL

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
there was a part nbr for the 4 x4 frame perches about 20 years ago as I had researched the availability of them then, but were obsolete already at that time. there should be a part nbr for any frame member or part

Therefore I'm wrong again, I'll look harder! Please review the apology above!

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
I'm searching for pics for my better understanding. I believe these are perches, or are they motor mounts? Top ones are 230,250 and 283 engines Bottom ones are 292 I6 As was said, the passenger side one is different.

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
Thanks,
I fixed the post. Are the 283 V8 the same as for 327 and 350?

Re: 230 straight 6 to 327 v8 same bell housing?
Your pic shows perches, towers, frame brackets, or whatever else people want to call them. The mount is the bonded rubber/metal assembly that fits between the perch and the block on a V-8. Inline engines have an additional part, an engine bracket, that fits between the mount and the block.
