tranny problems 700r4

ok, so i've got an 87, just put in this junk yard tranny about 150 miles ago. It was shifting good at first, now all of a sudden it doesn't want to come out of first gear unless I rap the thing all the way out. I don't know what rpms but its really high. then it won't go into 3rd or 4th. I did the initial adjustment with the tv cable of holding it wide open and clamping it, but that was it. It seemed to be shifting fine. Fluid is good, what other possibilities are there?

Governor gear is stripped. In the rear of the trans on driver side you have a round metal
cap.Tap it off with a chisle. Then pull governor out and look at gear.If its stripped then just replace the gear itself.Make sure you get the other pieces out of the trans. The
700r4's have this problem.Good thing its a plastic gear.

Re: tranny problems 700r4

Try the governor out of your original transmission. If that doesnt help the TV valve might be stuck.

The tv valve is hanging up inside the transmission cycle the throttle to fully open when the engine is off this may unjar the hang up.there are some additives such as lucas for auto trannys that will help clean the valves inside the tranny, the governor valve also will somtimes stick or hang up you might check that also since you have it out.

Re: tranny problems 700r4

ok, so I took the truck out, stomped on the gas a few times while it was off, and now it shifts. but I have to intermittently repeat the steps to get it to shift again. The valve must be sticking. The tranny guy I know said that when they sit for a while they will do that. any wayto get this from sticking? I put some seafoam tranny stuff in it, but nothing yet.
