Re: 1974 Chevy K20 with less than 26k original miles
Wow. This is a great truck. I would not try to repair the rock chips either. you will have a tough time matching the truck with modern paints. I would give it a good wax and enjoy the truck. I wish the truck my grandfather had was half as nice as yours.

Re: 1974 Chevy K20 with less than 26k original miles
It's hard to see everything in the pictures but the one bad area is that pass side boxside above the tire. 73-75 GM did not install drain holes and it appears there is rust perforation coming through. To slow it down, I would thoroughly washout those inner panels with a water hose from both ends of the inner bedside. Let it dry out for a period of days and then get some POR 15 inside the panel till it drips out on the ends. A wand and a shutz undercoat application gun would be best to saturate the inner boxside cavity. I'm betting the original Ziebart has cracked and trapped moisture and dirt inside the boxsides. I've seen that happen in doors and quarter panels before with undercoating cracking and holding moisture. Probably worse than if it had not ever been applied! The rock pitting rust on the lowers can be cleaned up and Por 15 dabbed in lightly and touched up with some touch up paint made up from the auto paint store. It of course will look touched up but much better than rusting further and more paint chipping off. And keep the touch up down to just dabbing in the chip area and not painted over the area. It also looks like the Ziebart undercoating was oversprayed on the outside of the rockers making it appear to be corroded from the angle of the pictures? I would try and clean that overspray undercoat off with paint thinner or even brake clean on a rag and watch how out for how much factory gold paint comes with it. You will want to test clean on a small area on an underside fender lip before going on an outer panel. Another thing is make sure the chipped areas are totally clean from dirt and old wax before prepping for touch up. An old toothbrush with wax and grease remover works good for scrubbing those areas clean. A long day of cleaning and polishing would do wonders on that original finish. But be careful to not over do it. That is a beautiful truck I sure wish it were mine to keep it totally stock original and driven only on sunny days. Mark

Thanks for the helpful tips. The rust overall has not gone through anywhere. It is purely surface. I just don't want it to progress further. The truck never is driven in rain/snow, and it is stored in a heated/cooled garage, so time is on my side. I am gonna try some of these things out! |

Re: 1974 Chevy K20 with less than 26k original miles
Post a close up of that right hand box side rust above the wheel. Not to be contrary but it looks very much like rust perforation from the inside out from my experience with those trucks in that area. You might want to carefully poke around into that rust area there with a ice pick, awl, or small screw driver to see if the metal is solid or soft from starting to rust from the back side. It just looks all too familiar. Either way I would get some POR 15 on both sides of that rust to keep it from continuing outward.

Thanks! AC is not working right now. It's kind of frustrating looking at it and not having it work. I have not tried charging it up yet though...so never say never!

WOW... that is nice! IT would be a keeper to me for sure. I used to have a C20 the same color. I still have 1/2 of it- now a pickup box trailer

Re: 1974 Chevy K20 with less than 26k original miles
Very nice original Kev. The RH box side looks very much like it does has some pin holes in that rusty area above the RH wheel. Use the POR 15 on the back side and then dab that front and touch up the paint as I mentioned before. Then I would get a set of 4 original GM wheel lip mouldings and the GM accessory gravel shields to cover up those rust pits ahead of the rear tires. They are listed on eBay quite often and also here sometimes. But make them genuine GM for this quality of truck. The wheel arch mouldings are not going to cover up everything rusted on that box side but it will look pretty good and solid and hopefully stay that way if it is preserved with rust stopped and remain out of the elements thereafter. You will want to coat that area with POR 15 under those stainless GM shields to keep the rust from spreading underneath and outward. Clean up the rest of the overspray and dab in chips. Then enjoy the factory paint as long as you can. Once its' repainted its like everyone else's restored truck. To me worth less than if it's original factory paint. Mark

It looks like I will be getting this out of storage this weekend and giving it a good cleaning, waxing etc. and drive it around a little bit more. Unfortunately, due to upcoming bills etc...I am probably gonna have to list this locally for sale. If I do, I will let you guys know and I'll post it up here and elsewhere online! |

Re: 1974 Chevy K20 with less than 26k original miles
you should put a link to the for sale ad in your signature. Go to your UserCP area and edit your signature, copy and paste the web address and put a title above the link. Then all of your posts will have a direct link to the truck for sale...
I'd put FOR SALE! 1974 K-20 w/26K miles http://blah,blah,blah
