weekend purchase
I have barely touched my 71 K5 but I couldn't pass this up. I realize its not a gen 1 Blazer, but none-the-less! Its a 1981 2 wheel drive body and that's where the stock parts end.
Gen 5 502ci Chevrolet Dyno 611 hp, Torque 645ft-lbs Edelbrock Aluminum Oval-port heads Edelbrock Performer RPM intake Full roller Crower lifters & cam Holley Demon 850 cfm double pumper Hooker Super Comp Headers, 3" stainless exhaust, 40 series Flow Master's Turbo 400, B & M Ratchet shift One-off hand made tube frame Art Morrison rack and pinion steering 4-link adjustable suspension 9" Ford, Detroit Locker, Dutchman Axels, and wishbone rear axle housing. The list goes on, but you get the idea. Presently not running because of a bad lifter, but I have a new set from Crower and a cam to install and then its ready. Best part? It was my fathers ride, built it himself. Step mother made off with it when he passed away back in 96, letting her new husband drive it all over. Finally talked her out of it! Sorry about the picture quality, must have been too excited! |

If it's a solid roller, make sure you got the HPPO option on your lifters, it provides pressurized oil to the needle rollers, essential for any kind of life on the street.

I appreciate your comments. I will get some pics of underneath soon, taking it over to my brothers and he has a lift. Thanks for the heads up BigBlocksRule, I believe your point is the exact reason the old lifter went and flat spotted the cam. |

Thanks again for all the comments guys, working on getting it over to a lift for some underneath pictures for all of you. The reason there is no chrome is my dad's cardinal rule when building it; less weight = more free horsepower.
The front and rear bumpers are fiberglass. He went to scrap metal dealers and pulled aluminum sheets out of bin's and band-sawed all types of brackets to use in further efforts to lighten it up. He took his own scale to a speed shop and asked to weigh all the wheels before purchasing the lightest set! Obsessive? If I remember correctly after all was said and done we took it to a truck scale off of I-5 and it weighed just about 3100 lbs. It was primered with over-spray all over and he shot the wheels satin black primer,(before the step-mothers husband painted it) this was to give the "sleeper" look he desired. He desired the "gee, look at that beater" before taking pink slips type of approach. Its all mid 90's hardware, so as I look at it I can find further weight savings with new tech! |

After my last post I walked out and snapped a few pics after trying to crawl underneath. The battery has been relocated to the passenger side frame rail, it drops down. You can see the 4-link and front rack, its dirty, but it's no trailer queen!

Couple more, you can see the oil pan heater plug coming out the driver side of the grill. I am not a big fan of advertising what's under the hood, so I think the "502" and Vette emblems are going to be removed.

I think the only "upgrade" I would entertain would be raising the header tubes up a bit. You might search info about chevelle BBC long tube headers fitting a bit better .... or not.

So, after five months of the engine being in the machine shop, and coming in two times higher then what I was quoted and taking three times as long the engine was installed.
Subsequently the carb when installed decided to spew fuel when the engine was fired. Six weeks later the Carb Shop finally finished the overhaul, 3 weeks overdue of course. Reassembled everything fired the engine and ran it on the chassis dyno only to find the engine was running lean all the way under power. Hmm, deductive reasoning led to a fuel pump only pushing 3-4lbs. No problem, I run to the parts store and procure a new pump and filter. Driving back to the shop I ease over a speed bump in the neighborhood and BANG! The front end just dropped several inches on the passenger side, I almost crapped my pants, I get out and find the drivers side coilover shock had just exploded! Limped to the mechanics shop two blocks over and walked the four miles home, burning about 5000 anger calories, that was my Friday. At least its supposed to rain again this weekend so I won't be too bent at seeing everyone else out playing with their rides! |
