62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
I have a 62' chevy c10 short bed that I swapped a 72' c10 rear axle into so I could have 5 lugs and do a disc brake conversion. I got new trailing arm saddles welded on so that it will bolt into the truck. The problem I have is I think the U-joint from the 62' driveshaft is to small for the 72' pinion. Does anyone know if a pinion from a 62' axle will fit on a 72' axle or a 72' drive shaft fit in a 62' 3spd. trans?
I would pull the pinion off my old rearend and see if it will fit the 72' axle but I sold my old axle already.

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
you "think" that it is to small. either it is to small or it isn't. . if they were the same type of rear axle, you could have just changed the yoke, you don't have to change the pinion.
there are conversion joints avail from your auto parts dealer.. if you know the prpoer 72 application they should be able to look it up and tell you what it is and give you the size and then match it to what you have ron |

I dont know why i said "think". Would O'reillys or NAPA have these conversion joints?

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
I looked on O'reillys web site for a u-joint for a 72 and a 62 and found that they list some of the same part numbers. I bought one today for a 72 and will test it out when I get home. If it works I will let you know, like I said I didnt investigate it to much when I was under there saturday night. I was more concerned about rearend fitment.

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
go to napa the guys here do this for me all the time...bring the DS and the yoke if you can...if not bring a gift..they can look up the stock u joints for each and get you the proper joint...sometimes its as easy as using the 72 caps on a 66 joint...

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
That's what happens at our store, order the two joints, exchange the caps that you need, return the rest as defect. You pay for 1 joint but use 2 for the parts you need.

Hey a/h, I told him exactly what he had to do. you go back and read it and then follow your own advise.
I told him that he needed a conversion joint and to go to his auto parts store and that they should be able to help him perhaps he still needs his mother to hold his hand ron |

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
Alot gets lost in typing something as opposed to talking directly. White flag both sides of the border, were working this out.
"Precision" a manufacturer of universal joints use to give away a Plastic Vernier for this situation. Measure the yokes and give the measurements to ANY AUTO PARTS COUNTER GUY and he should be able to match things up for you. There are books on the different sizes available. I would suggest a store that has been around for awhile, the computer doesn't always help in these situations, Paper Rules!

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
when I replaced my rear end in mine with a 72, the drive fit right in no modifying. I did think I had to get a bigger one but was not necessary.

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
Hey Goat: I actually had a new collar that matched the rear I had put onto the driveshaft i had. They just cut off the old one and weld in a new one. Then you have exactly what fits your new rear. You can then use your existing joint. The collars don't cost that much, think it was around ten or fifteen dollars. Got it all put together, cut welded and balanced and a new joint for around $120.oo at a truck service company. They had all different size collars. Any place that does driveshaft work should have one. Why mess with a conversion joint, for about the same money you probably can have a standard setup.

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
Ok so I got my u-joint I bought yesterday for a 72' home and matched it up to the rear yoke and its to small. I matched it up to the drive shaft of the 62' and its the same size. I varified online at o'reillys.com that the 62' and 72' take the same u joint.
My guess at this point is that the rearend I have is not from a 72'. The u-joint i would need to fit the rear yoke should be 3-5/16 from cap to cap and the u-joint for the 62' is close to 3-1/16. I need to find a 30 spline yoke that takes a 3-1/16 u-joint or go to a driveshaft shop I guess.

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
Where are you measuring those joints? The 62 shaft should take a 1310 joint, which measures about 3-1/4" over the cups. This is the distance inside the lockrings, or between the tabs on the pinion yoke. The cups are 1-1/16" diameter.
I don't have a 72 to measure, but the next larger common joint is a 1330, which measures about 3-5/8" over the cups. The cups on this one are also 1-1/16" diameter. Please measure the pinion yoke again, and measure it inside the tabs. Ray Last edited by raycow; 10-13-2010 at 12:38 PM. |

Re: 62' c10 with a 72' c10 rear axle. Driveshaft problems
Its possible I measered it wrong, and I wrote 16ths instead of 8ths.
But I got it solved, I went to pick-n-pull and found a early 70's chevy c10 and measure the yoke and found it was what I needed with the correct amount of splines. I guess the axle I got was out of a long bed or something that needed a big drive shaft.
