Wheel Lock Removal
Well I was up at the shop starting to tear more of the 62 down, and when I went to remove the hub caps what do I find? Low and behold, wheel locks. Guess what folks, I dont have the key, and it is knowhere to be found. The man I bought her from has no clue either. These are on the original 6 lug wheels. Does anyone have any tips on how to get them off? Thanks in advance for any ideas or imput.

Re: Wheel Lock Removal
I've done it in the past with a good chisel. The keyword here is GOOD chisel, not a Chinese one. Start a cut on the upper edge applying force counter-clockwise and it will unscrew. A quality chisel with a sharp edge will cut into the lugnut.

Re: Wheel Lock Removal
I bought a lock lug remover from the local parts store. (pep boys)
Oreilly and others should have them. I paid about 27 buck and you get 2 different sizes. Worked out great for me. My locking lugs where almost to tall for the remover but a few hard hits from a good size hammer, then put your impact wrench full on reverse and your done. looks like this http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.gif

Re: Wheel Lock Removal
Some of the tire stores around here use an ordinary socket wrench with a taper ground on the inside. They just hammer it onto the lock until it is wedged tightly and unscrew it.

Re: Wheel Lock Removal
I've used the chisel method, but I've also done it by filing a flat spot on the lug and locking vise grips on it (necessity being the mother of invention) - if there's room in the wheel

Re: Wheel Lock Removal
or if you have a welder, you could weld a lug nut to it, and wrench it off...

Re: Wheel Lock Removal
now THAT is a good idea jonzcustomshop!
Kinda unnerving that you can buy a tool for $27 to remove wheel locks from the local pep boys... Pretty much defeats the purpose. |

Re: Wheel Lock Removal
I've always just used a old metric socket six point or 12 point that will start to slip on , then hit it a few times till its lodged on then take a breaker bar or 1/2 drive rachet w/ extension or air gun and zip it off ... Remember your wheel nuts will always be on tighter than your wheel locks .. Hope this helps ...

Re: Wheel Lock Removal
Yep.....removed a couple sets by hammering on an impact socket and buzzing them off in reverse.......not hard. Just be careful if you have nice wheels.

Re: Wheel Lock Removal
I recently bought a car w/ locks and wasted alot of time buying remover sockets that didn't fit in the hole in the mags, and asking a few tire shops. I finally spent 5 min taking them off with a chisel and BFH. The locks were pretty crappy steel.
Any name brand, large (about 1/2" to 3/4" wide) cold chisel should be fine. Last edited by 72lb4x4; 08-19-2010 at 10:03 PM. |
