Grafting frame horns
Ok guys, my frame was cut for a rollpan by a PO, just in front of radiator support mounts. I have frame horn sections, going all the way behind the steering box mount area. Where do you think the best place to cut would be? I'll obviously try and reinforce the area, but wondering where the easiest spot would be to line up, and minimize the stress issue on the graft point.

Re: Grafting frame horns
i'd put on as short a piece as possible to restore frame. there is no need to reinforce the very front of the frame horns as there is no load or stress on that frame section other where the bumper is bolted to it
that's why i always reccomend when clipping the frame horns for rollpan to take the cutoffs and tackweld in the frame channel for future repair to stock

Re: Grafting frame horns
I would just clean up the cuts on your truck & trim the new horns to fit & weld them on. no need to make extra work.

That is what I would do. The less you cut the less you replace.

Re: Grafting frame horns
I had to replace mine also. Here's what I did.
I just removed the rear two rivet heads on the core support bracket on the inside of the frame. Cut the frame in between the rivets. I left the rear rivet shaft in place. Cut the new frame piece to match. the holes lined up perfect and helped line everything up. Then just welded it all back up. Everything looks square and measures up square, but i have not mounted a bumper cause my truck is in pieces. I chose this method for two reasons: 1. The rivets would help line up the frame horns. 2. The core support bracket will help brace the frame repair. Last edited by MAK191; 10-13-2010 at 03:08 PM. |

Re: Grafting frame horns
MAK, thats kinda what I was thinkin. That would help clean up the frame rail where the PO torched a whole right in front of the radiator support too.

Re: Grafting frame horns
I'm not sure if this is the best way to repair, but it worked for me.
Here is a picture I took during the mock up. |

Re: Grafting frame horns
nice bevel, that should make a good weld.
