53 IFS help & build
I just picked up a 53 burban and want to install an IFS, I am new to the whole AD series. Which one is the best to get? I was going to go the MII route but am not sure which one to get. I will be getting it as soon as I get rid of my 50 burban. Any suggestions on where to compare? Or who's is better? I have heard that some don't give you very much adjustment, is this true? Can I still run the original 235 and 4 spd trans ?
Thanks

Re: 53 IFS help
Well I cheaped out and didn't get one from Scott's but wish I had. For one thing their participation here speaks volumes. It would have been worth a couple extra dollars for me to be able to ask questions and get support.
There are a ton of options out there, 9/10 times at the end of the day it doesn't matter what you spent it's how you feel about the product, installation, support and service. Is it something to be proud of or something that bothers you a bit forever? I keep learning that lesson over and over. Hope that helps!

Re: 53 IFS help
well let me ask you this, replacement parts can be bought where? how low will this kit get my frame from the floor? who's brakes/ rotors are you using. I ask this because if in 20 yrs I need a rack/pinion or A-arm I want to be able to get it quick. That is the only reason I am hesitant to buy "custom" stuff for my upcoming project or my current one. I see your in Oxnard? Usefull for me because it is only a lil drive over to you. I see your product and it looks great. Do you have a FULL weld in unit?

Re: 53 IFS help
CHIZZLER, how low does your frame sit or your running boards from the ground on an empty bag?

Re: 53 IFS help
Scott Danforth has a kit that welds in and uses standard GM Metric A arms and such. He's got adapters for rack and pinion.
I don't have any experience with one YET but have met Scott a time or two. There is also a group that makes kits that use Dakota parts out of AZ. You'll have to do some looking around but these are out there. |

Re: 53 IFS help
We set mine up so that running board brackets hit the ground.that puts the running boards at about 1" off the groung from the bottom.we will set bump stops after it is all together.front crossmember is a full weld in one piece.fits nice and tight just like it should.no guess work.we did not have to notch it into the frame at all.right know i have 26.5" tires on all 4.i plan on running 28." tires in the rear.hope that helps.

Re: 53 IFS help
There are a lot of ways to go if you do some hunting around.
Scott's front end (s) shown above are really nice but as for me they are so far beyond my budget that I can't even dream of having one. I really like the idea of a crossmember that uses the GM mectric (G body) pieces as that the repair pieces should be fairly easy to buy at parts houses for a long time. There is one truck here locally that has a stock MII crossmember under it that is competitive at any show it goes to anywhere and hits at least one event in the Pacific Northwest. He probably has 40,000 miles or more on it since the conversion was done. Not the thing anymore but it was installed right from the get go and from all indications still works great. I've bought a few pieces to use with a MII crossmember on my 48 but am still undecided as what to run at the moment. The Jag XJ6 setups look interesting but are a bit hard to get here locally. I haven't seen enough of Scott Dansforth's crossmember to make any decision there. I do know that what ever I go with, all wear parts including bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings and brake pads will have to be available through normal auto parts channels and not have to be special ordered from one and only one source. I put a lot of miles on my truck and have already worn it out twice in the past 37 years and will no doubt putting a lot of miles on it once it is back together again as the first planned road trip is to Texas right around the time I retire. |

Re: 53 IFS help
Not doubt Scott's IFS is a very nice quality set up. There are a lot of quality IFS kits on the market. I went with the Heidts ISF for my 52. I also installed a Heidts in my 66 Chevy II. You can see pics. of my IFS in my build thread. Either way, do your homework and make good decisions. Stick with a quality IFS. Don't be swayed by cheep priced IFS kits that are imported from China.

Re: 53 IFS help
Yes they are and the main reason we use them. There are several
brake applications that will bolt up to the spindal that are not to out of price range for the customer. Also for the guys who want the bigger aftermarket brakes as in wilwood bear stainless steel brembo brake man strange All of these will bolt up to the spindal as well very easy One more thing to add bolt patterns we have 5 on 4 1/2 5 on 4 3/4 5 on 5 5 on 5 1/2 6 lug As you see here we have areas covered and on our prices I do understand what some of you guys are saying how it is more than some of you want to spend. If you really do your Homework and compare all you are getting with other kits and ours.I will bet you will be suprise how are ifs is still in the ball park with other kits on the market. Compare the quality of our one piece style crossmember to your 3 piece style mustang II style and look at our a-arms and rodends and coil-overs over your coil-spring.As I also will say you cannot go wrong when you have a quality Tig welded product over a Mig welded product does not compare. Re: 53 IFS help
Tig vs Mig? how does that compare as a sales point? other than looking a little better a Mig weld is just as strong.

input much more precisely that with any other common form of welding,Sure a perfect mig is just as strong as a perfect tig weld. But you can't be sure that the mig weld is pefect, with the tig you can be sure because your watching the process, step by step and adjusting on the fly,Welding machines are effected by alot of variables and for a perfect weld to occur you might need to be constantly adjust the volts & amps. That just isn't realistic with mig.Sorry tig is actually better! Well, Either way as soon I get some more money together I will be most likely calling you to purchase one of your front end kits. You have shown something to me that the others haven't which is confidence in your product, parts availability, and most of all your willingness to prove your product. All of the other places I have called I get an attitude, arrogance, and feel like I am annoying them. Thanks for your help with this. Also, CHIZZLER helped a lil He is VERY happy with his not to mention I love the way his burban looks. Plus looks like your kit will weld in, in just a couple hours of layout. probably 4-5 hrs of assembly. will be a nice weekend project for me & my son. I promise CHIZZLER, pics are coming

The one I'm talking about is a cross member that you can buy to weld in. Everything else is stock parts you can get from NAPA or where ever you want. |
