283??
I'm looking for some preformance upgrades for a 283 and I haven't found much, if any. I was wondering if they make intake manifolds, headers, and just things like that for a 283, or if I would have to use parts from a different sbc.

You should be able to use almost any pre 86 SBC bolt-ons. With a few exceptions. The valve covers may have stagered bolts and not the typical straight across bolts. You will find that there are no holes to mount very much on the front of a 283.

The first thing most people do with a 283 is 2much cam-2much carb-2big of heads. A 283 is a good little motor if everything is matched. Problem is you can rebuild a 350 for less

All the externals are available but it gets expensive to rebuild them if they need bored. Oversize pistons are $50-60 EACH because not to many are sold. I love 283-327 motors, they will rev like crazy and can make some serious horsepower. My 64 Chevelle came with the original 283 and I bought another 283 block that was already bored .030 over just for the pistions to use when I rebuild the original. And like dwcsr said the accessories hung off the exhaust manifords and water pump bolts.

I had a 283 in a 69 Nova. It had a 327/325hp cam and shaved the heads down, Holley 750, and i used to kick the crap out of my cousins 454 70 vette. But after the 1/4 he walked right by me like I was in reverse.

Powerpack heads, AKA Double Hump heads came on them in some cases. Usually with the 1.94 valves, though. Like others have said, there are no mounting holes in the heads, everything is mounted off of the exhaust manifolds. I'm putting one in my '54/S10 swap we started Friday.

I got a '62 283 builder from Craigs list. The block package (hot tank, bore, hone,.030 over pistons hung on re-sized rods, rings and bearings ran $800.
An old timer in the area did the heads for $550 using all new parts and installing hardened seats for unleaded gas. Misc items (cam and valve train, fuel, oil and water pumps set me back anther $300+/-. This are great little engines with high tin content blocks and forged steel cranks. There's no replacement for displacement but for charisma you can't beat one. |
