Punched Holes in Tranny Hump - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My '64 Fenderside has two punched holes in the upper portion of the transmission hump similar to the holes depicted in the attached photo. It seems like i have seen these holes punched in other trucks on this forum. Why would these holes be there? Will I regret patching them?

A guess , but they might be to geat at those 2 upper bolts easier bellhousing/motor.
those 2 are the hardest to get a good bite on.

theoretically one doesn't need to undo those bolts on a std trans in the truck as everything in the flywheel clutch area is accessible through the bottom of the b/housing and if it is an a/t a 24" ext and a 9/16 impact flex socket will get up in there nicely

If you have a stock bellhousing (cast iron and open on the bottom) there is no real need for those holes. If you have an aluminum full-circle bellhousing, you might want to leave them there.

Im thinking it looks like a car 4 speed setup. Maybe it had 2 different car 4 speed setups over time.

My 64 gmc has the same holes, they are drane holes for aftermarket ac underdash unit. There are 2 drane tubes one on each side of unit. MIKE

x2. My 64 (the one I had back in high school) had a dealer installed under-dash a/c set-up. It had 2 drain tubes that were poked through the floor carpet & dumped condensate out the tunnel.

I would plug them with rubber grommets. Then you can keep the cold air out and be able to access the bolts if needed.

That makes a lot of sense. That's how they installed aftermarket smog controls on old engines back in the early 60's. A hole would be drilled in the intake manifold (while it was bolted on the engine!), and then a lead hose fitting was pushed into the hole. The valve cover and air cleaner didn't need a drill because a fine precision hole (?) could be pounded in with a punch and hammer looking just like the ones in the floor pan photo. Hoses were attached and the car was now smog legal. Of course the engine failed shortly thereafter because of all the filings dropped in the engine and all the new found vacuum leaks.
