Column Swap Original Steering Wheel
I am replacing my 3 on the tree with a 700r4. What is the best column swap if I wanted to reuse my original steering wheel.
Thanks Peter |

Re: Column Swap Original Steering Wheel
A direct bolt-in would be a '60-'66 Chevy/GMC automatic column, but there are other options. The shift indicator on the 2-speed Powerglide says P R N D L and the 3-speed Turbo Hydra Matic says P R N D L2 L1, so you will have to make due or come up with another indicator.

Re: Column Swap Original Steering Wheel
I replaced mine with one out of a junk yard. 73-87 chevy or gmc trucks,or vans work great and have tilt column and you can still use your original wheel.

Re: Column Swap Original Steering Wheel
just a note that these columns have the key in the column...look for 70's vans, they have tilt and they are keyless, you can cut em down too. i believe there is a thread some where on this.. feel free to chime in guys

Re: Column Swap Original Steering Wheel
Any modifications to the steering wheel to get the horn to work? Or will it work with the '72 column?
Thanks Peter |

I agree with Tony. No mods, and they look the best IMO. Also, I think LMC or one of those companies sells a replacement shift indicator for OD transmissions. Good luck with whatever route you take...Here's the one we have in the '65...

Re: Column Swap Original Steering Wheel
Yes the 70's vans are best, get the whole section. sterring wheel down to the rag joint at the sterring box. when swaping back to the old wheel just leave the newer horn contact in place and it will work fine
