cab & frame different VIN's and no titles, could it be made legal?
Ok so I want to get a cab and frame and build my own 73-87, I have like no money to work with and it would be a LONG project. If I buy a cab by itself, maybe with no title, and then a frame, maybe with no title, could I get something like that legal to drive once done? I mean could they make me a VIN or reconstructed title or something for the VIN on the cab after maybe title search or something?

You will need to look at the laws in your state. Go to the DMV website and research what it takes to generate a vin# and have it registered. My guess is at minimum you will need proof of purchase, bill of sale, or something to prove that you paid for everything.

I was thinking bill of sells even if I got them free have them write me something out maybe. I'll have to dig into the dmv site and find out.

Easier way would be to go in one day and just ask one of the people there what it would take. I know some states will give you a "custom" title (similar to a kit-car title) if they can go out and inspect the vehicle to make sure it's street legal. Others will let you put a lien on a vehicle with no title and after 30 days they will write you out a new title for the vehicle. Places like FL (where I live) won't let you do anything without a title; not even with a bill of sale. Just depends on the state.

DO NOT build one based on a phone conversation. Unless you have it in writing, it is not a fact. I recently found this out the hard way with a classic license issue. No matter what the State told me, the county would not issue the plate unless they had proof in writing.

Does WV require a title for a vehicle that old? GA requires a title back to '86, Alabama it's '70 or '75.
You may want to contact a title agent. Basically you pay them to jump through the hoops and stand in line for you. A friend and myself have registered several O/T vehicles this way. |

Re: cab & frame different VIN's and no titles, could it be made legal?
My '87 is actually titled as a 2000 ASV..(AssembledVehicle)...It was built using different years of trucks, (older frame..'85 cab...'86 motor/tranny) and the guy that originally built it put it together in 2000 and had it inspected by the Highway Patrol.....They then designated an "Assigned Identification Number" and attached it inside the drivers door jamb.... I still have all of the original inspection papers etc. that I keep in the glove box and have had no problems...........But, that's here in KS...I'm not sure how they do it elsewhere.
