Re: Decided to part out....
It needs $351 in DMV fees paid to put on non-op. I would have to get it smogged and some of the parts are not there. Then it would have to be registered again(taken off non-op). The engine is partially dis-assembled(needs heads, intake and 1 exhaust manifold) I dont have the extra money right now to mess with it,and the longer I wait, the more the fees and penalties go up(Kalifornia for ya) If I am not mistaken, they charge 160% of the registration fee and 160% of the weight fee per year that it is not registered or put on non-op...for 3yrs. and those fees will not go away for 4-7 yrs until it fall out of the system. I cant afford it. I would love to keep it,but like I said, can't afford it.

Re: Decided to part out....
Brother that appears to be to nice of a truck to hack apart. Lots of people are trying to get their's into this shape. I bet you put the entire thing up for sale, it will go REAL QUICK! You can buy a used motor pretty reasonable and just swap them out. You can sell the old motor for some money and that would reconcile some money for ya.

Re: Decided to part out....
Meh, I dunno if you're parting it out cause you have too much spent on it, and you're trying to get your money back, or if its because parting it out instead of selling it whole, makes your wallet fatter, but either way, killing that truck is lame. Just my honest opinion.

Re: Decided to part out....
As an FYI, when you purchase a vehicle in california, you can non-op it, and get it registered in to your name without completing smog check (which stops the back fees from multiplying). Its noted in their computer system that you have to smog prior to bringing it back to road worthy/ registering the vehicle.
I just did this this past summer with a truck. DMV understands that people buy "fixer-upers" and that they are not always running when purchased. You have to deal with a knowledgeable dmv clerk though. One guy at my local dmv is not to sharp. Needless to say when he called my number, I would politely pass and wait for the next clerk.

And I am not trying to make my wallet fatter by parting this thing out. And in all honesty, if someone wants to buy the whole thing they can. I do have other things I could put up for sale, but I think trying to sell a BBQ rotisserie trailer will take the right person to buy. If I could sell that before the fees go up again, by all means I would keep it,but I dont see that happening.

Re: Decided to part out....
Or if you want to chuck that motor and go to your local recycling yard and pick up a late model 6.0 motor and take the computer and harness and just do the swap and it will save you alot of hassle and money.Or just put the truck on ebay or sell it here and someone will be gladly nice to take it off your hands and build a nice rig....
thanks pat

Re: Decided to part out....
Sorry to hear you're parting it out but I agree that the family comes first. You have my respect big time, a lot of guys aren't man enough to stick around with a special needs son. It takes a specialkind of man to raise a son with those struggles, hats off to you and good luck parting/selling the truck.

Re: Decided to part out....
manimal,
I am with you, I have a 12YO special needs son, so I know what you go through everyday. I will pray for ya bud! Cali seams to discourage anyone that wants to resurect these old vehicles period. Maybe the big three have them in their pockets.

Re: Decided to part out....
Lance, your truck, do with it what you want/need. Hats off to you for being well grounded with your priorities in line. Don't let the naysayers get you down. If they want to save it, let them buy it or be quiet.

Re: Decided to part out....
Can you Historic tag it? If it's a DD then that gets a little tricky with the mileage limits. I did that here in MO but it's not my primary transportation. Nevertheless it's yours, do what you need to.

Re: Decided to part out....
manimal, I can understand you have priorities, it just sounded like you were quick to part it out, and over the years, I've learned that people part things out, usually just because they can make more on parts.
I just have a passion for older vehicles, shoot my 86 is the newest vehicle I've ever owned, and its even a bit new for me. You didn't mention selling the truck whole in the original post, what will it take to buy the old truck? For about $700-$800 a person could about get it shipped anywhere, I know around here that shortbeds are a little rare, so many have been trashed out over the years, and had hack jobs done to them, or just rusted to nothing. I had a 76 Harley shipped here from Virginia that had sat outside for 18 years, and then restored it back to factory condition, I don't see why you couldn't get atleast 1,000 for it, even from someone in another state, but then again, I dunno how much you have invested. |

Re: Decided to part out....
To be honest Dru, I would rather sell whole, so I dont have a disassembled truck in my yard. My wife would stomp a new mud hole in me if I had a half stripped hull just sittin around!

Re: Decided to part out....
Manimal,
I have a 21 yr old disabled step son and my 8 yr old daughter was born with problems also. I totally understand priorities brother! You have to do what is best for your family without a doubt. I have been able to make extra money dealing with older vehicles throughout my life. I wouldnt make alot of money but i enjoyed bringing autos back to life and watching other people use them. I really enjoyed helping a young person get a ride they were excited about. I bet you can find someone that will purchase the whole unit as a whole if you advertise it. Good luck brother. |

Re: Decided to part out....
Good choice on getting rid of it. I'm a firm believer that most vehicle projects do more harm than good to a family's well-being. When one is working on a big project, something ALWAYS has to give. Cars and trucks don't mean a darn thing in the grand scheme of life.
