'74 starter wiring ????'s
What wires go to the "R" terminal on the starter? I know that the purple/white starter trigger goes to the "S" terminal, but dos anything go to "R"? I could have sworn there were two wires coning from the "R" terminal, but I cannot get the truck to start. It is acting like the neutral safety switch is not working, and I have checked it all with a test light. It seems good. There is a pink wire that is routed there and goes to the back of the fuse box that is getting very hot with the key on, too. Any ideas? I really need to get this running this week. Help!!!!

The R wire is the one that runs up to your coil to supply 12v when starting.

Re: '74 starter wiring ????'s
That's what I was thinking. As I pulled some of the tape back, it looks like it ties into another yellow wire, and I had put that one to the coil. The same wire is connected to the small pink wire that seems to be getting hot. I am puting in a newer ignition with a seperate coil (87 TBI engine), should I run a new wire to the coil? Where is a good place to get switched power during run and crank? I only found 1 terminal on the fuse block, but I put the auxillary fuse box for the fuel injection to it.

Re: '74 starter wiring ????'s
I thought the R terminal was for the points dist setup? I have never ran wires to the R terminal. I was told it gives constant 12 volts to the coil while turning over.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"S" is for start....."R" is for a bypass wire to go around the ignition ballast resister so the coil gets full 12 volt power will cranking if you engine has an HEI distributor, forget about it. |

Re: '74 starter wiring ????'s
That's what I am thinking. But my question now is do I clip the pink wire that's overheating at the firewall and run a new hot to the coil?
edit- it looks like it goes from 12 gauge wire from the ignition switch to the firewall plug, and 20 gauge wire from the firewall plug out to the engine compartment. Is it really?
