Re: Mystery noise when in drive. Video..
I have had a flex plate make that noise but remember it spins at all times it's bolted to the egine. Putting it in gear drops rpm level therefor making the flex plate spin slower and causing less wobble. I can hear the noise a lil in park or neutral the best way to solve it is remove the bolts from the torque converter and push the converter back it should move about half an inch. Once this is done try it again if it continues you most likely have a rear main bearing issue if it's gone then you know it's in your trans....my guess to at fist would be flex plate but I've seen it be the bearing. If noise is louder once ruck is worm it's definitely the rear main bearing.

Re: Mystery noise when in drive. Video..
I forgot to when you have the converter lychee back you will need to simulate the rpm drop on the egine since putting it in drive won't do anything....just turn your idle screw but count them so you can return it to the same location.. Just saw the video again and the noise is there even in park or neutral good luck let us know bud.

Re: Mystery noise when in drive. Video..
I think you will find the flexplate cracked at the bolts where it bolts to the crank. My 69 Camaro did the same exact thing an took a week to find it.

Wow!! sweet U.S. iron. I would kill for that elcamino. I believe that is the first year of it. Nice Monza, Skylark and 50's pickup too. Must be nice not to get shocked when you work on old American Cars. Personally I like watching the people who buy old MG's and Healey's get jolted here. Cool Pics!

Well, its no different with my last restoration it was a MK1 Golf(Rabbit here)had a bugger of a time with the fuel injection. Learning curve, now I stop and help golf owners every time I see one broken down side of the road.

Re: Mystery noise when in drive. Video..
OK! Small update on this, I suported the front of the Trans with the Jack unbolted evrything and slid it back on the crossmember, then unbolted the FP...and
Nothing! no crack of any description. Put it all back together and for a small time the noise had quitened but not gone, so in frustration while driving the other day I floored the go pedal to see what would happen and now the Truck lurches/judders in reverse and forward gears, kinda like putting your truck in gear and instead of giving it steady gas you dab the pedal on and off this only happens while moving slowly, once underway that goes, so now I am looking at the Torque Converter as the suspect, and it's looking very likley as a little Googleing has informed me that when a TC is showing signs of failing you get a thing called "Torque shudder" which could be what i'm feeling and that they can make a ticking sound which I have on the video.

Re: Mystery noise when in drive. Video..
I wish you would hurry up and fix this already! I see it looks like maybe the torque convertor bolts were loose at one point? They look kind of wallowed out to me. were they tight when you dissasembled? And did you check the flex plate closely? Sometimes it is hard to see the cracks. Good luck, Eric

Also buy another flex plate. I agree that those holes are too wallowed out.

Re: Mystery noise when in drive. Video..
i haven't heard many good things about the B&M converters. but i have heard lots of great things about the tci trannys and converters. so i would get the tci in a heart beat. and i also thought that the holes looked elongated. i would buy a tci flexplate while i was at it if i were in your position

Re: Mystery noise when in drive. Video..
Heah, the torque converter on my 454/400 has six bolts through the flex plate, it don't move back and forth. Check into R/V type stalls, they hold up to all the torque you can give them. The more bolts, the more strength, the more busted knuckles. Good luck.

Re: Mystery noise when in drive. Video..
My 78 c10 used to do the same thing. Ticking in gear and quiet in neutral. Then I lowered the tuck and the noise stopped. Hopefully it doesnt come back

Re: Mystery noise when in drive. Video..
Well the upshot on mine was indeed a faulty TC, found a whole lotta silver grey metal fillings in the trans fluid which had settled in the pan, so something had definately come adrift in that TC, and the debris went through the tranny which then needed to be rebuilt.
Went for a TCI converter in the end, and a fresh rebuild of the 400 and it's been running great ever since, I wouldn't recomend a B&M converter, don't think they're put together all that well.
