Front bumper question

I am wondering what the difference is between the 60-62 front bumpers and the 63-66 bumpers. I bought NOS front bumper guards (part#985502) and want to make sure they will fit 65's.

Re: Front bumper question

I believe the 60-62 frames are a little wider than 63-66.

Re: Front bumper question

The reason I ask is because they don't fit my repop 66 bumper but they fit on my 65 bumper. Also the instructions show they go at the frame location w/o drilling the bumper, is this correct for 64-66.

Re: Front bumper question

I am not sure where you bought your bumper guards but LMC clearly states their BG's only fit OEM bumpers.

Re: Front bumper question

The mounting holes are closer together on the 60-62 guards vertically compared to the later frame. The bumper mounting holes on the later frame are farther apart vertically because the frame rails themselves are taller than the earlier design. If you’re going to mount them outboard of the bumper bolts the guards will probably interchange, although I don’t believe any NOS guard will fit on any reproduction bumper.

The “correct” placement is subject to interpretation. The 1960 Chevy Accessory Installation manual shows them mounted over the bumper bolts:

However the instruction sheet and template that came with my NOS guards 20 years ago shows drilling holes 3” outboard of the bumper bolts:

I have no information on GMC, but assume they were meant to be installed outboard of the bumper bolts since placing them over the bumper bolts visually blocks the G&C grille letters.

Re: Front bumper question

Can anyone with a 60-62 measure the distance vertically between there bumper bolts, mine are roughly 4-3/4 center to center on my 66.

Re: Front bumper question

I am pretty sure that the 60-62 bumper is a little different shape than the 63-66, I think the ridge is lower and sticks out a little more

Re: Front bumper question

Did anyone ever get a vertical measurement of the bumper mounting hole placement for the 60-62 frame versus the 63-66 frame?
