Standalone trans controller. Anyone?
Im trying to decide on how im going to power my motor and transmission. Wondering if I should do a standalone for each one or run them together. I don't know what would be best. Let me know what you guys would recommend.

Re: Standalone trans controller. Anyone?
if your using a 4l60 or 4l80 just let the computer handle the tranny, since you'll have to have it to run the motor. If your running a carbed setup, then you would need a trans controller if you wanted to run the 4l60 or 4l80 (without a full manual vb). Otherwise with a th350,400, 700r4 or 200r4 you wouldn't need a trans control.

Re: Standalone trans controller. Anyone?
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/genera...kit-4l60e.html
Large but good thread on the subject (its for a 4l60 but the concept ends up the same). Apparently the LS3 requires an ISS (input speed sensor) instead of the 2 VSS that the 4l80e has equipped. They mention a few different controller options, or adding an ISS to the trans (retarded expensive) Hope it helps.

Re: Standalone trans controller. Anyone?
4l80e has a ISS and a VSS, people just say they have two VSS's for some reason. The 4l60e only had a VSS....until 08 then they got both.

Re: Standalone trans controller. Anyone?
usmcchevy, when I looked it up at the parts store, they said 2 VSS. One being the input VSS (which I assume is the ISS) and an output VSS. Is the ISS physically a different sensor, or is it just another VSS serving similar function?

Re: Standalone trans controller. Anyone?
Intresting, Autozone doesn't even list a VSS for the 4L80e. Just two "speed sensors" one labeled input and the other output. Every wiring diagram and piece of technical data I have lists a ISS and a VSS. The ISS is the same type of sensor, just checking the speed of the input shaft of the trans verses the output shaft speed. That way the PCM can figure out the difference in speed to determine slip and shift problems.
This might explain it a little better than I can: http://www.performancetrucks.net/for...ht=4l80e+2+VSS |

Re: Standalone trans controller. Anyone?
I'll check the link out. When I had my buddy look it up, he said the listing reported "Sensor, Vehicle Speed" and then Input and Output. Sounds like we are def talking about the same thing tho. Thanks

Re: Standalone trans controller. Anyone?
Ya, just use the computer for the motor to also control trans. My 01 6.0 LS dbc used to have a 4L80 4x4 trans. behind it. I had a new 4L65 built for it and had Jim at Speartech redo the computer in order to control trans. Works great.
