Radio - stock size vs DIN

I am soliciting suggestions on a radio. My radio hole is not the large DIN size, but the bottom of it has been cut lower. So I have to either cut the hole open bigger or fix the smaller hole. I was considering the USA-630 that fits the original opening. It has USB and Ipod connection, but no CD unless you connect a CD changer. Has anyone used the USA-630 radio and how do you like it? I am really torn between it and just putting in something modern. The truck will look all factory except for the stance, wheels, and drivetrain. I think I am using the stock custom cab wheel, gauges, AC, but I am not sure about the seat. I guess I am mostly interested in knowing if anybody likes that radio or any other USA model from Custom Auto Sound.

Re: Radio - stock size vs DIN

There have been other threads about the Custom Autosound Radios. I have a USA-1 in another vehicle, it fits, looks like a bad copy of a stock unit, and the sound quality sucks, IMO.

If your dash is already cut up and you aren't doing a "restoration" I would just enlarge it to fit whatever modern radio you prefer.

Other option is a hidden radio, like in the glove box.

Custom Autosound radios are made to fit the original dash openings and have a lot of nice features. It's a shame that the quality is so poor.

what he said^^^

I have the large hole in mine and when a radio is in there, no one cares really, but you will if it sounds like garbage

Re: Radio - stock size vs DIN

I installed a USA1 unit in a 66 Buick...what a pile of trash it was, they took the cheapest radio to make these things from, It worked and fit but the tuner was junk and you would have to fiddle with it every few miles, and the wattage was so low it was hard to find speakers ...there are lots of better options for the same price, there is a hidden radio at the car shows, I don't remember the maker

Re: Radio - stock size vs DIN

rbar,

I bought a USA radio. It was Chinese junk of the worst kind. Threw it away.

Check out these guys for a radio fitting our trucks.

They seem to be pretty serious although I don't have one. I mounted a DIN size radio under my dash in the channel I put in for the AC vents.

Re: Radio - stock size vs DIN

Thanks for the info guys. I won't be buying one. I may just go the DIN route and get blue tooth and ipod capabilities. They had bluetooth on the higher optioned trucks in 65, didn't they?

Re: Radio - stock size vs DIN

I am having the same issue with my '65. I thought I would be fine with just cutting the hole in the dash bigger to accomodate a DIN style radio, but when I went to buy one I felt hesitation like I never thought I would. Now I'm not so sure. I don't really care about having a CD player, but I would like to have the Ipod/mp3 player control. It's a shame these Custom Auto Sound units seem to be such poor quality, the ads sure make them look good.

I like what I see at the Retro Sound website. Anyone have much experience with these?

^^^^ I agree with them on the Custom Autosound- have one in a vintage muscle car and not that impressed- it certainly doesn't have any 100W as advertised and it's premium priced
