Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

Just enter desert fox in your ebay search, it'll turn up.

Brush guard is gone, they put a plow on the truck.

You may have to build one ....I have one on a Street Coupe that was built when the truck was new ...I think they copied the design

Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

Any of you know enough about these desert foxes to know if this one is legit? I have talked to this guy and he has loads of info including the original 1977 magazines the truck was supposed to be in. I done some research and most of it seems to check out, but I cant get over the striping colors. The original articles show the last stripe to be black and this truck ends in shades of purples? He says he has the original paint cans that the truck was painted with and they are correct. any thoughts?

Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

If this was the prototype truck, GM could have made changes prior to production.

Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

May be on the prototype being different but its supposed to be the same truck in the 4wd magazine. I know see that that top strip was actually a deep blue and not a black so maybe it could have faded into that purple color. I am asking ?'s bc I cant stand that purple on that truck but I am such a stickler for factory correctness I would have to keep that purple! lol

Yeah I have wondered the same, just dont want to make a mistake, lol. It is also badged as a 15 or I assume K15, would that be correct. I know they built these things on a 3/4 ton frame, but I can not make out the fender emblems in any of the pics of the originals?

Also just noticed the mirrors are wrong and its is suppose to be the original paint? hum

Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

It's still a nice truck for the money, with some nice parts (grill guard/rollbar). Find out if they're made by Hickey Co.

Yes he says they are the correct bars by Hickey and the correct lights. He also said its missing the sticker in the glove box so that throws me another question mark. Just not sure?

Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

I had one of those roll bars for years, came out of my 79 stepside. I might still be able to find it if it's worth anything to anybody. It doesn't come apart though, so it couldnt be shipped. Somebody bondoed the ugly slip fit seams so it looks like all one piece.

Speaking of stripe packages, early on somebody posted the picture of the Jon Baker CHiPs stepside, thinking the same thing I was about the Desert Fox stripes. But that reminded me of an old old stripe package that I've only seen on two trucks, and the local GM guru told me "it was some kind of GM Gentleman Jim package or something". I know it wasn't Gentleman Jim, but he seemed sure it was a factory thing. The truck was probably the first custom, lifted truck I ever saw as a kid, woulda been late 70s, it was maroon with a red/orange/white zigzag coming from the roof down the side, then wide going to a point at the front wheelwell. Much like the outline on the Jon Baker truck, only the back half went vertical onto the roof right behind the door frame.
Everybody loved this truck, and in fact many years later, his little brother built an 85 as a tribute to it, only he painted it blue and the striped came out ugly, he used white, silver and then a reddish/copper that clashed with the blue.

Anyway, if anyone knows what that stripe was called, if it was even a factory thing and not custom, I'd love to know. I'd almost consider painting custom ones on my crewcab.

These are the two order forms from 1978. They may answer some questions about options.

Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

Your probably right. I have had these on my computer for a long time. Grabbed them because my original copy is no where near as clean and my scan would not look as good. So they very well could have.

Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

They are mine, file name matches.

It isn't a big deal, I have them on my site for all to enjoy...would just like credit when they are used and not have people say they are their own. I purchaed all of the Desert Fox stuff at a swap meet a couple/few years ago, and still have the originals tucked away safe.

Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

I see what your saying. Keep in mind I do own a fair amount of literature from the 70's, and I do own the series, so its not like I don't have these and I am boosting them straight out. Your scans were cleaner, figured it would be a benefit to those that are fans.

For the record to all: These scans came from 73-87.com and not from my personal set of Desert Fox Literature.

Re: Desert Fox, Chevy Sport, and Sun Tiger

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to identify a Desert Fox besides all the add on Hickey accessories and the paint scheme? Like anything on the trim tag ect?
