LS swap fuel system setup
In the next week or so, i'm going to begin swapping a 4.8/4l60e into my '66 Stepside. I'd like to hear from folks who have done one of these lsx swaps and moved their fuel tank to the bed. I've done quite a bit of reading on the subject, but there are a couple parts I'm not clear on.
I don't mind having the fuel pump external to the tank, but what I dont' want is to have to have a fuel filler door in the middle of the nice wooden bed I plan to eventually install. Are there any aftermarket tanks that have a side fuel filler neck, or that leave enough room between the tank and the bed to put a 90 degree bend at the neck and run the filler from the rear fender area? I've also read that the tank needs to be baffled internally, but is that for internal fuel pumps only? I'd love to see pics if you've got em! Photobucket is messing with me, but here's a couple of shots of my truck when I brought it home. Thanks! Last edited by 1966Stepside; 03-20-2011 at 07:53 PM. |

Re: LS swap fuel system setup
You might consider one of those set ups where the fuel filler is below the wood and one board hinges up to allow access.

TR65,
I was really looking for the fuel cell you were using. Was that a summit part also, or did that come from somewhere else? |

Re: LS swap fuel system setup
Another option is a fuel tank made specifically to your needs. Check out this vendor's thread....

Ive used close to 10 of the ricks tanks. While pricey I really like them.

I used a Rick's tank like jays68yak. They are very nice. They even put in two sending units for me, one for the computer and one for the old gas gage. The in tank pump is nicely baffled and uses a standard AC delco pump. TR

On another note, if the fuel pump is external to the tank, does the tank still need to be baffled? I was looking at a build thread today about using a '69 Camaro tank and a flip down license holder. That looked really neat, and I like the 'stealth' sorta idea behind it. I'd love to use that, but I'm sure those aren't baffled at all. Edit: D'oh! After looking through your build thread again, TR, I see where you said it was a Rick's tank. I fail at reading. Last edited by 1966Stepside; 03-21-2011 at 10:15 PM. |

Re: LS swap fuel system setup
I don't think it has to be baffled but it would need to be sumped (pickup at point lowest to tank) so there is a constant supply of fuel to the pickup.

Re: LS swap fuel system setup
I have one of the "fuel Cells" that summit sells, 16gal, it pulls from the lowest point in the front, has no baffles and I havent had any issues so far with fuel starvation.

Re: LS swap fuel system setup
I also run the "fuel foam" in my tank to help with any sloshing that might occur. Works pretty well and its cheap.
