Volt meter gauge?

I was trying to hoke up a volt meter gauge and no mater how it is hooked up it don't seem to want to work. This is a after-market gauge so what is the proper way to hook one up? I thought you run a wire from the alternator to the gauge and then from the gauge to the bat. I hooked it up so many different ways I may have screwed up the gauge it is made by Auto-gauge. If you have any feed-back on the proper way to install it it sure would be welcome. I'm thinking the gauge is faulty or I fried it? Thanks for any advise.Vernski

Are you trying to hook up a voltmeter or an amp meter? For a volt meter, you need positive 12V from any source under the dash that is hot with the key in run position, then a ground to the negative side of the guage to any decent bolt under the dash. That's it.

Thanks Steve yes it's a volt meter I was thinking it was like a amp gauge.So then a volt meter is grounded, this one confused me because both poles are insulated from the housing and are not marked + or - either. Thanks Woogeroo for the diagrams....Vernski

After I got the gauge out of the cluster I could see the + - on the gauge they are so small you can barely see them, hooked it as per Slorio and it work just fine. Thanx all Vernski
