Fixing Dash pad
Good Day Guys.
What would be the best way to fix a dash pad with a tear in the middle. Did anyone ever fiberglass them? i want to respray all the interior from burgundy to black. What paint do you suggest? |

you can either fiberglass and paint the dash or you can fiberglass or fill the holes with foam and cover the dash with vinyl...
I recommend SEM Color Coat for the color change...I use it at my shop all the time and it works awesome... |

I've done upholstery work for a living for over 15 years so I have some experience in it, but here's some pics of a repaired and vinyl covered dash...this dash was quite cracked and broken up to begin with...I took a grinder and knocked down the high spots where the original vinyl was curling up around the cracks...then I took landau foam and filled in the cracks...after that, I took a piece or 1/8" landau foam and covered the entire top of the dash...then I blocked sanded the foam to smooth it out some more...the landau foam is like a closed cell foam, it's very easy to sand with some 100-120 grit sandpaper...I then patterned the vinyl over the dash, sewed it up, and stretched the vinyl cover over the dash and glued it around the backside of the dash...I don't glue the cover on the topside of the dash because if there are any waves or dips in the dash you'll see them plain as day...if you stretch it and float the cover over the surface of the dash none of the imperfections show up...

I use about 2 yards of vinyl to sew up a dash cover. Pm me for info on where to get it at.

i am in the process of doing an all metal dash for my 90 V3500. I have grafted two sections together to make up for the amount of coverage that is lost when you remove the vinyl and foam.

that looks good in that link...the only thing I would add is that when they smoothed the area around the crack and the speaker grills, it's going to be smooth while the rest of the dash will have a grain on it...you will see that difference when you dye the dash...to hide the difference, SEM makes a texture coat that you can spray over the whole dash to make the grained part and the smooth part blend better...
