Amazing! Thanks so much for all the tips, and instructions. I definitely can handle this and look forward to jacking the truck up and getting busy! I am loving my truck! Played with it last night and painted the gauge bezel....looks awesome. I will take pictures as well and try to follow up on the thread in the upcoming weeks. Here's how it looks now and as you can see....I need to get busy cleaning

Yes you have to change the pitman arm. The original will not fit a '68 and up power steering box.
The idler arm you do not have to change unless it is worn out. Then you can simply replace it with a direct replacement. When also converting to disc brakes using stock '71-'87 spindles, I recommend changing the entire steering linkage if possible. This keeps the entire front suspension including the steering the same vintage. This makes remembering what you need for replacement parts, years from now. If you do retain your original steering linkage with disc brakes, you will need the aftermarket aluminum tierod adapters and a couple different tierods.

Why does the bracket allow for any misalignment between the shaft and the input for the steering box? For a needle bearing U-joint, I could understand, but not for a rag joint. It should just be a straight shot and the rag joint would only need to compensate for movement of the cab relative to the frame.

My steering box adapter plate aligns the steering column shaft with the steering box input shaft.

Just a note of precaution, I put a 1985 front end on my 64 C-10 and it makes this install much easier, I also am installing a LS2 engine and the PS pump is metric so I was able to use factory hoses for the hook up. The area where the bracket is also prone to the frame cracking, I used dye penetrate in the area around the holes and found several cracks that had to be stop drilled and groved out for welding. Just a precaution but was time well spent for safety. Good job on the pics and instructions.

FYI for anyone with a 66 truck, a dbl D shaft from a 67 will fit into a 66 column. Does a PS conversion need to change the length of shaft to keep the steering wheel at the same distance from the floor? Last edited by vince1; 01-19-2020 at 11:42 AM. |
