Door Window Restoration Questions
Sorry, this is long winded.
I removed the door windows and ventilators on my '65 C10 Pickup today. As with everything else on my truck all these parts appear to have been taken apart at one time by one of the numerous previous owners. The window regulators have been previously replaced, as well as the door locking mechanisms. That's a good thing, they all work well. I have a question and can't seem to find an answer after having done the disassembly and after reviewing my '63 and '65 Shop Manuals. I think perhaps the previous owner didn't have things assembled correctly. My question: The glass sets in a "sash channel". On my truck the sash channel was not fastened to the glass, on either side of the truck. I merely pulled the glass out. The sash channel was slid over (2) rollers of the window regulators. I slide the sash channel forward to disengage the rear roller, then backwards to disengage the front roller. That would explain why my windows always had a gap at the top front when the windows were rolled up. Oh, and another thing. Where did you get your window fuzzies and did you buy the ones with the chrome bead or the black bead? I read on another post that the black ones rust soon after installation. Any help would be sincerely appreciated. John Last edited by lakeroadster; 05-10-2011 at 06:48 PM. |

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
I picked up my window fuzzies from Classic Parts of America they fit well and the cheapest I could find. The black ones do rust if it is left outside the chrome might be better if it is a driver or not parked inside. I can't remember for sure (been a couple of years) but I think my rollers were both in the channel, hopefully someone else will chime in with the correct awnser.

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
Both rollers go inside the channel.

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
Thanks.... I learned something today
How do you push the window forward and then lift it up? Isn't the forward roller still in the channel then? Or does the sash channel need to be removed before the glass is removed? Thanks. |

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
Don't know what your calling a sash channel. The vent window has to be removed. I just installed my door glass. This is the way I installed it. The way I did it was drop the front of the window down into the door with the regulator all the way down or close to being down. I installed the front roller in the glass track. Then dropped the back of the glass down to level. While holding the glass i rolled the window 2-3" from closed. Then slide the glass forward, lined up roller and slide it back.
Hope this helps answer your question.

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
That answers the question. Thanks for your help.
FYI: The Shop Manual calls the lower metal piece that attaches to the glass the sash channel. |

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
What are you guys using to fasten the lower window channel to the glass?
I talked to a local glass shop and they say they stick duct tape to the bottom of the glass, enough layers so that it fits snugly into the metal channel. Then use an utility knife to cut the excess tape off. Sounds kind of strange so I thought I would ask. Maybe use silicone? Any advice will be appreciated! Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
Try a google search I did it and used glass to metal adhesive where to buy as my search term found several but as far as local one said Sears and another said try aquarium glue found at pet stores but not sure outside of that the aquarium glue said it dried clear and I would assume it is water resistant so might be a good way to go. Hope that helps a little.

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
It could be setting tape, really thin rubber, thats maybe why duct tape got used instead as it would essetially perform the same function ('til the glue dried out and it started to deteriorate like duct tape tends to do).
Don't know if I'd want to glue it in ,a broken window would mean a new sash channel too. T

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
I used setting tape. I agree duct tape would fall apart over time.

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
It's been many years since I've replaced a side glass, but I always used setting tape. I suppose some type of thin rubber might work with weatherstrip adhesive, but as 63sbssbbw mentioned it might be difficult to disassemble in the future. The original setting tape really stuck well however and needed gasoline to soften up enough to remove the glass.
I wouldn't use duct tape because it wouldn't stick tight enough to either the glass or the channel and would indeed deteriorate over time. If the window got frozen in the up position it wouldn't be all that difficult to pull the channel off the bottom of the glass with the window winder. |

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
LOL apparently not YOUR local glass shop.!
I'm sure it's available somewhere..ie Brothers,CI ,ECE etc If you can't find it in their 60-66 section, go back to 55-59 or even 47-55 ah here it is...Truck Shop part #55-15880..1/32 x 1 1/2" Don't know if you can still get, that # was pulled from a '00 catalogue, but now you know its out there. Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
I called a handfull of local automotive glass installers... everybody had their own "slant" on what to use, all of which wanted to do the job themselves @ $50/hour, min. 1 hour + materials.
I ended up buying a roll of the tape from Classic Parts. For $50 I figure I can screw this job up about 10 times myself.. Thanks to all for their advice. Last edited by lakeroadster; 06-01-2011 at 01:50 PM. |

Re: Door Window Restoration Questions
I got setting tape at a local auto glass shop. They just gave it to for free, enough for my two windows.
