Re: faster time.
I doubt the tailgate on / off, open or closed is going to offer much. For every 100 pounds you take off the unsprung weight you can expect about 0.10 seconds improvement. 35 pound tailgate ain't gonna offer much.
Probably the best thing that can happen to most street vehicles is go to a shop and have the motor tuned on a chassis dyno. Get a print out and pay attention to the torque curve. Then use one of the online shift calculators to set your shift points for the track. Theres a really good one on Bowlings pages (left side bottom of list). but you have to have some real world dyno numbers to get the 'real' best answer. http://www.bgsoflex.com/auto.html I'm going to guess running 13's that starting line traction isn't a huge issue. If it is,, stay AWAY from the water and big burnouts, and letting air out of the rear tires. Typically all 3 of those will hust 60 time with a standard street tire, not help. Otherwise,, weight is your enemy.

Re: faster time.
On run my 235/75/15 on the track. Im suprized how well they hook on the track. I cant say so well on the street. And I'm guessing the tail gate is like 80lbs it's a 84c10 btw all steal. I'll get a video and more into on the truck in a little.

Re: faster time.
what carb and ignition are you running? Have you tried playing with the timing at the track? You would be amazed at what the proper tuning might do for you like Marv was saying. I do my tuning at the track. The only chassis dyno in my area is marginal at best.

Re: faster time.
have you tried bring the secondaries in quicker with the different springs? I like a 650 double pumper for the street/strip rides unless they are really radicle.
Tell us more about the motor itself. How fast is it now?

Re: faster time.
400 sbc stock bore. Stock crank. Flat top pistons . 72cc truck cast heads. 1.90 1.50 beehive springs. 1.6 roller rockers. 503/510 lift cam don't know the rest of the cam off the top of my head. edelbrock eps intake. 1 inch plastic 4 hole spracer. Holley 750 vac 2nd. Msd billet street fire hei. Th350 trans-go shift kit. Stock stall from the 305/th350 combo. 3:42 auburn race posi. 10bolt. 235/75/15 tires for now.
It shifts at 5400rpm I don't like to manually shift it since collom shift. Put it in drive and let it do it's thing. Leaving the line at almost 1100 before I start spinnning at the line. Truck hooks pretty well at the track with only 28-30 psi out back. 5/5 drop. Flip in the rear. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: faster time.
I am going to say the heads are killing you. Is that a set of 882's/ or what?

Re: faster time.
did you change to a longer rod. that is the biggest thing you can do from a stock 400 is go to a 5.7 or a 6 inch rod and get rid of that big heavy piston

Re: faster time.
those are tall heavy tires. you could try a shorter drag radial. also make sure your fronts are at max air pressure. some will even go 5psi over to less rolling resistance. i assume the engine is in good tune. if not, plugs, wires, air cleaner, etc can pick up a tenth or two if old

Re: faster time.
I read that unhook tha front sway will help in weight transfer & airing up tha tires to 45psi helps cut down on tha rolling resistance..that thing flyin to 882's it..
