Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Well guys I finally got finished cutting, bending, adusting, grinding, etc and got the filler hose installed.
Here is where my fuel filler neck will be. I had to cut a 3" hole beside the existing hole with a whole saw. Basically you just cut the 3" hole as far over as you can without getting into the side support. I also had to grind some of the bottom of the bed off inorder for the fuel hose to make a straight shot to my fuel cell. I also had to cut roughly 4 inches off of my filler hose and then bent it where it needed to be. (3" whole saw also shown) If this idea works I will do a full right up on all the tools and parts needed to complete this task. Hope it works! Thanks for your support guys! Looks like it might be quite difficult to unscrew the cap with the limited finger space. Thought about using a "permacap" ?http://www.kleenwheels.com/about_permacap.htm

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Looks like you have a sight P-trap design there, I think filling up will still be a PITA unless the entire path of fuel flow is downhill. I agree with the cap, you might have a hard time getting the cap unscrewed un less you have something more to grab on to.

I'm getting worried. Looks unsafe.

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
I'm still worried about the cross-member. Yeah, that hitch, if you want to call it that, may be keeping the bottom of the frame rails from moving, but there's nothing keeping the top of the frame rails from flexing inwards with the weight of the truck on suspension, except the bed bolts.
No offense, but the comment that was made about safety on page 1 is incorrect. If you're putting other motorist's safety at risk, then NO, you don't have the right to build the truck any way you wish. Good luck.

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
There really is a little more room than the picture reveals. I do agree that the cap u posted would be easier. Unfortunately it won't work with the filler neck I'm using. Wish I could though.

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Probably would be worth the effort and money to get a filler neck that would accept the fixed cap. Then you can position it a little lower to allow better installation of the gas pump nozzle when refueling.
Other wise you'll be kicking yourself at every fill up. Last edited by lakeroadster; 04-12-2011 at 10:46 AM. |

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
This is a really bad picture but I made this in 5mins. lol..... Perhaps you could cut and "box in" a filler line compartment behind the tail light that would allow a clean flow and you could angle a cap like the pic lakeroadster provided? Of course my picture was much bigger than needed and on the wrong side but you get the idea.....Plus once you ryno line the bed it'll look stock. Just an idea.

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Here's how we dd it on my 82 Blazer. I know the area behind the tail light is different between a truck and Blazer, but thought I would throw this in there.

I agree though for sure. I dropped the filler as far down as I could using hose I did. Still may be a problem filling up. Oh well I tried. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Whatever you do, don't give up on your design, there is always a way to make something work, but sometimes more fabrication is required. I have enjoyed this post, it has been very informative...I hope you get it finished, tested, and report back to us. If it doesn't work well, I hope you hop back on it, refine, and let us know again how it went.

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Trim a 1 1/2 off tha top off tha hose...Trim tha flanges in tha light bucket down some so you can twist tha cap off..add some clamps & hook of tha vent & give it a try. There are always folks that will rip what others do..don't let get you down..

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Thanks for the support guys. I think I will do a little more work freeing up some space around the fuel cap for easier access. I'm glad yall posted more pictures too. N2trux and 502ss. Gives me even more inspiration to do better. I'll keep everyone up to date! Thanks again for the encouragement and support. It's hard making dreams out of dimes. I'll get there someday!!!

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
I dont think anyone here is dogging Hazieview, I think everyone that has said a comment about it is acutually concerned and just looking out for a fellow member. I dont BS when it comes to safety and I apologize if my "I'm worried" comment was taken to heart. I think this is a fantastic idea but should not be taken as a joke when he stated:
