FNG and a 66 Suburban

New guy here. I just picked up a '66 Sub project. It's pretty solid except for a little rust-through in the floors where they meet the rockers. The story goes that it's been parked since a wreck in the early 70s and has passed through 2 or 3 people since, each one added parts to the collection but no one ever actually did anything with them. Now I have lots of spare parts to help fund the project. Let me know if you see anything you need..

I've already scored a '78 chassis for the disc swap, the plan includes an LS drivetrain and a mild static drop. Plan to run stock, painted steelies with poverty/dog dish caps and blackwalls. It's going to be a (very) mild custom, daily driver that'll haul my gear, boards, bikes, dog and camping equipment. But probably not all at once..

Have a look:

The hood was jacked, I got lucky and found a '63 GMC hood that was decent. Planning on filling the seams and turn signal holes. The sheetmetal is just sitting there so please excuse the misalignment.

I get to practice my metalworking skills. That tail light corner has me worried though..

Did I mention spare parts?

I thought it was 4 but I have 8 complete sliders. Not sure about the presence of locks/latches yet, I haven't dug through them all. The big bonus is that the truck came with Steele Rubber for all for sliders!

Solid spare barn doors with all the latches hinges and striker plates, no windows. I might use the GMC grille if I can get that dent straightened out.

Fremont-built truck with factory air dash with radio delete, dummy light instrument panel with less than 29,000 on the clock. (I'll be looking for a panel with gauges)

Relocated ashtray and mysterious door-jamb pin-switch under dash.

The rear has the weirdest suspension I've ever seen. It rides a bit stiff but will be easy to lower with my chainsaw.

It needs a windshield, a driver's window, a tailgate handle and a pass. side hatch support.
I'm going to need some advice on the hatch; the hinges are very stiff and it won't close all the way. I have ordered the reprinted factory manuals so I won't be completely lost..

I'm looking forward to diving into this project and learning about these old trucks, I've wanted one of these old Suburbans since I was a kid and my neighbors had one. Only took 30 years..

Rick

Re: FNG and a 66 Suburban

Welcome to the forum

Looks like you got a decent Burb to build with a couple nice factory options.
Yeah the right rear quarter is a little rough. A stud gun would work good on that. Since you have another complete quarter, it might be easier to replace the whole thing.

Re: FNG and a 66 Suburban

Thanks Jocko, I drove right by you today (sorta). Picked this thing up in Fallon NV and came down 395 to 58. (I'm in Bako)

That's exactly what I was thinking Captain, stud gun or cut n weld. thanks!

Any ideas on a 553 paint code? I couldn't find that number on any of the charts I found online.

Looks like you have a Treasure Trove of parts for a great project. I have always loved the Burbs! If I ever find one in good enough shape I want to build one.

Re: FNG and a 66 Suburban

Welcome and great project, good luck with it. I have several of those exact suspension parts in my shed from when I repaired my fence, you think I could put them in the for sale section and make a buck or two?

You think home depot will have that same rear suspension in stock? I'm thinking about swapping mine out for one like yours!

Re: FNG and a 66 Suburban

c.brown- It had an auxiliary fuel tank behind the seat. It was huge, 2-1/2 ft tall, a foot deep and went the width of the seat. The inner panel was cut with a hot-saw so I'm going to pull a patch from one of my spare quarters and already have a small piece of that area to patch the hole on the outside. Does yours have a hole on the inner panel too?

Sam, you'd probably have to dismantle a pirate ship to get a timber with the right girth and attitude.

Cort- I call em Kentucky koils..

Awesome! Still though, I think your going to have a sweet ride when you get this project done.

Re: FNG and a 66 Suburban

I stripped off the front sheetmetal yesterday. This thing was definitely a desert runner. That dirt on the floor is dry-lake silt.

YOUCH!

The forward crossmember is bent too. Looks like I'm going to replace the left frame horn and x-member. I'll figure out how bad it is after I get the suspension & steering stripped off and can start measuring things.

Re: FNG and a 66 Suburban

Score! '78 front suspension and 12-bolt! Only had to give a portrait of Benjamin Franklin. Got the steering box too.

Can anyone tell me, or better yet post a pic of what's missing here? There must be some sort of bar that spans the 3 bolts..
