What are some common problems with 4x4s?

Im looking at a nbors 76 gmc 4x4 (I know I druled to) haha but He said it didnt have a front drive shaft, and something else (Im sorry my memory is not good ) But what are some common probs with these trucks? It needs some body work but its actually a pretty solid truck. I got some pics that I attached. Sorry there not the best. And It will need a total interior rework. And whats a good offering price? I can get more info if needed. It has a 400sbc with 350 trans, with 96k on speedo. Needs tires, dual cherry bombs, he said he forgot the lift that it has, and Its been sitting for six years. (I know i should prob stay away but Im addicted ). Any help will be awesome. Thanks guys

Re: What are some common problems with 4x4s?

Most common problem is tha they cannot pass a gas station!!!! But their a good solid truck if it has not been rusted out. You'll want to check the power sterring drive gear, they have a bad habit of tearing out the frame area, but I believe there is a plate that can be welded on. Looks like the one your loking at has full time 4wd, no locking hubs.

Looks like a decent project, but I wouldn't go any higher than $1500 for it.

Re: What are some common problems with 4x4s?

yep frame cracking like mentioned, the plate can be welded on in addition to either fabing ur out brace or buying a brace that also bolts in. If u get serious about it I can send u pics or start a thread about my weld in plate and my own brace I fabbed.

Even if the frame is not cracked yet, it probably will, at a min do the brace or weld in plate, both if ur running 35 and some offroading.

If the drive shaft is missing I assume the 4x4 is broke.

Yes sir, NC truck with minimun* rust. The floors are worst part. The corners and rockers is like new. The floors have some rust holes but there not as bad as Ive seen. I was thinking $600 is the most I would offer to.

Thats what I thought to about the 4x4. But from what Ive read the 4x4s are pretty easy to work on.

I would have to check withthe owner. Couple guys around here took out front drive shaft because of the Full-time-4wheeldrive. But I would check they are easy to work on, but easy doesn't mean cheap.

Re: What are some common problems with 4x4s?

For that truck, I would start out around $750, and wouldn't go higher than about $900. it needs a lot of work. Interior, as you mentioned. Paint. Assume the 4wd doesn't work, even if the owner says it does. if it's been sitting a while, as it looks like it has, you're gonna have quite a few bugs to work out. Check it out really good, and drive it if all possible, before you offer anything for it. And start low, real low.

Looks like a 4" lift.

Re: What are some common problems with 4x4s?

ive got a 84 shortbed k10, mine was in similar shape as that, i picked it up for 500 bucks, the frames do crack, and with that truck sitting i would check out the gas tank, mine was leaking, along with a few others that i bought, easy fix but something to check for...also i had a bunch of electrical issues with mine..easy fixes once you find them

Re: What are some common problems with 4x4s?

The usual no broken springs no cracked in the spring mounts. usually the shocks don't get changed often so they are something to look at. make sure the bearings are good and greased.

I'd expect 4, that way when you get 6 you'll be happy.
