Quick 4.8 / 5.3 question

I just found this portion of the forums and suspect that I could probably find answers to my questions if I looked long and hard enough. Unfortunately, I am limited on time and need an answer asap. I purchased a 5.3 out of a 2005 1/2 ton Chevrolet pickup for my 1951 Chevrolet pickup build. Unfortunately, it was just a long block and doesn't have much in the way of accessories such as water pump, brackets, alternator etc... I found a very low mile 4.8 out of a 2002 1/2 ton Chevrolet that is complete including the L460E transmission I want to use. I know the block is the same for both engines and that the transmission off the 4.8 will bolt up to the 5.3 just fine. I'm just not sure about the other external accessories that I want to use on the 5.3. Also, the 4.8 and L460E have been sitting in a guy's garage for about eight years so I'm a little concerned about that aspect. Any thoughts/input would be appreciated, I need to try to make a decision on the purchase this weekend. I can get the motor/transmission on a trade so I'm really hoping it works out.

Thanks guys,

Tim

Re: Quick 4.8 / 5.3 question

all the accesories will bolt up no problem, the only differents with 5.3's and 4.8 are the pistons and internal stuff.

Re: Quick 4.8 / 5.3 question

Thanks, I suspected that was probably the case but wanted to be sure. Also, anyone have any thought on the other issue I asked about, the engine and transmission sitting for so long since being pulled from the pickup?

Re: Quick 4.8 / 5.3 question

I would probably put in some engine fogging oil in it, but first look into the combustion chambers to see if there is any rust in it. if there is, rebuild would be my next guess

Re: Quick 4.8 / 5.3 question

my engine sat for about 6-7 months before I bought it, and then another 5 while I was doing other stuff to get ready. I would occasionally spray some wd40 in the cylinders now and then, and put the plugs back in place to keep it sealed. I would also rotate the engine manually every couple of weeks.
Didn't run into any problems

Re: Quick 4.8 / 5.3 question

Mine sat for a year. I put some Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder and turned it by hand. I also had the injectors cleaned and balanced. Mine ran great since the day I started it.

Re: Quick 4.8 / 5.3 question

My engine sat for 4-5 years (covered and prepped for storage by the junk yard). Other than my fuel injectors being clogged I had no problems.

Re: Quick 4.8 / 5.3 question

Okay, thanks for all the input. I'll check the cylinders for rust and make sure it turns over.

at first this thread kinda made me nervous b/c my 5.3l has been sitting for at least a couple years. So I went out bought some Marvel Mystery, pulled the plugs squirted some in and it hand turned fine.

Not to thread-jack but any good diy recommendations on how to clean the fuel injectors? and which products to use?

Re: Quick 4.8 / 5.3 question

seafoam. If your running just put it in a tank and let it run through the system, otherwise take the orings off and you can soak them in a small tub of seafoam. Keep the electrical plug end out just to be safe.
