Ran outta gas at half tank?

1966 C10 with 350 chevy engine

Last week i was driving around at 1/4 tank before stopping to refuel. this week i've run "outta gas" at half tank (luckily it was right down the street from my house!). Anyone else had this problem? what was the issue?

after running out, i dumped a few gallons of gas into the tank and poured some in the carb and it fired right up.

the previous owner installed a new sending unit / float in the old gas tank (it looks new visually) - he said the tank was flushed as well. (but who knows)

what's the check list i should be following?

Re: Ran outta gas at half tank?

Is this an original tank? Is the pick up tube also steel? Im thinking there are hole in the pick up tube and its sucking air instead of gas.

could be.. it's the original tank and what looks like an "old" line coming out to the fuel pump. i don't see anything leaking...

Re: Ran outta gas at half tank?

Not sure how you can test that. I think its hard mounted to the tank.

Re: Ran outta gas at half tank?

wasnt someone saying on here the other day that they made two senders with different impedance and one runs out of gas (on the factory gauge) at half tank.

you probably think you are getting amazing mileage till then though

You are correct, however, thats just for the gas guage. The tube to pick up the gas would be the same for either tank.

Re: Ran outta gas at half tank?

The nice thing about a 60-66 is if the tank is behind the seat it is an easy matter to stick hose or brake line into the tank to see if the gauge is right or a hole in the middle of the pick up tube.......I had a 63 tank in a truck bed on a f#$%d and a stick was the only gauge I had ...........

Re: Ran outta gas at half tank?

I remember a thread about this guy chasing the air leak and he found it right where the pickup tube exits the tank. He went through alot of grief before finding it.

Also another thread of how the had changed the ohms rating in 66. So if you have a sender meant for a 65 below you get a different reading.

Re: Ran outta gas at half tank?

ok. update.
went to put gas in the tank to see if it was actually empty. only took 5 to fill it... so it wasn't out of gas.

thinking back, the last thing i ever did to the truck before having this problem was replace a leaking fuel line hose (the one from the line to the pump).. the hose i had used was a little longer and it kinda rubbed up against the bottom radiator hose.

so. i yesterday i rerouted the fuel line hose.. i'm hoping that possible the fuel line got HOT next to the radiator hose and caused vapor lock/overheating fuel...

anyone had that happen before?? i'm driving around now hoping that solved the problem
