anyone ever uses a transistorized regulator like this? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

i am going to run a gm transisterized ignition system from the 60's on my truck so i am thinking i will need to run a transisterized regulator as well. these parts are all in the 67 truck repar manuals but are unclear on this. these are the only pic's i could find of the regulator i have on the net. now my question. does this regulator have to be grounded to the sheet metal? my points regulator has a ground wire but these pictures dont seem to show one. anyone with experience with these? would prefer to not burn anything out so i thought id ask here before taking a shot in the dark.

Sixty's cars used to have one like it and I've never seen that type on any of the old trucks. I believe this one may have been taken off another vehicle and used on the truck.

i believe they were mostly used on cars with transistor ignition. Thay are in the truck manuals and so is transisterized ignition but they were probably just there for info and dealer use purposes. never seen either on a truck. i am putting one on my truck not claiming it to be facort by any means. I was wondering if any one of you have had these on a car you might have had and if it needs to be grounded to work?

In the side view photo, it appears there is a rubber washer between the body of the regulator and the core support - just like the rubber nuts used on the stock regulators.

Im not an expert and I have never seen one in any of these trucks, but to make it work it would most definitely have to be grounded somehow... As to where and how.... ???? That is a good question...

It's probably internally grounded through the wiring. I've got an old Chiltons that shows a picture of it but it doesn't show an external ground wire. The external ground wire probably wouldn't do any good since more than likely the electronic board is insulated form the outer case.

Personally, before spending what some are asking for these regulators I think I'd try a regular voltage regulator. Some of the ones you get at the auto parts stores these days are electronic/transistor types. Maybe they would work just as well and wouldn't cost you a ton of money.

I already have one of these regulators. I have the 67 truck manual and it doesn't show a ground wire either on the diagram. I just didn't want to have trial and eror with it and burn it out. Just thought it would be a nice addition to my restoration. thanks for the info.
