Re: Does it make u feel good
Sure, when I was using my dump box to unload at the landfill the bulldozer driver told me my truck was nice, then asked me how much I wanted for it. I told him it was not for sale and he told me he would give me $500 American. Buzz kill.

Hell yes, it gives me something to brag about when it gets criticized by haters.
Also, can I buy the grille out of your truck?

Yeah, it feels great. Even now that my truck is still crashed, I get complimented on how good it looks.

Re: Does it make u feel good
I agree! I have been offered up to $4500 for my truck and it has only been back on the road for a couple of months. For Indiana, the body really isn't bad, but it is still rough with a decent amount of rust. I just smile, say thanks, and keep going.

If I can make a little money, it's gone! I can always find another one. Most of the fun I get is working on it, anyway.

Re: Does it make u feel good
Actually no----i consider it a rude question unless it's been advertised or there is a for sale sign on it; i mean there are PLENTY of used trucks for sale in the paper and on craigs (that man is wonderful) etc. where one should not have to solicit a stranger cold off the street. Around here there are more trucks for sale than cars.
The other problem with this type of proposition is that they haven't even seen the drivetrain and yet they are quoting prices they want to pay. For instance i have a 305 in my truck and IF i did sell cold to a stranger (which i would not unless very unusual circumstances, i.e., hollywood producer just MUST have my truck for his/her movie and offers to pay VERY high $$$) i want $6000. Now IF, i decide to put in a 383HT which i'm considering then the price must go up. But how would you know unless you've seen the drivetrain? (reminder that the 383HT retails for about $4500) So no, it does not make me feel good. In fact, it makes me feel bad because i think this signifies a breakdown in society. i'm serious. i mean, what kind of guy usually makes these cold solicitations? A guy with a degree and a family OR..........???? P.S. i think a classier way to do this would be to put a wanted ad in craigs auto section(it's free) Example: Wanted 73-87 GM 1/2 ton pickup Running condition Clear title No serious issues Pay cash, reasonable Last edited by C-10 simplex; 09-04-2011 at 01:18 PM. |

x2
I take it as a compliment if asked "Would you sell it?" I take it as an insult if asked "How much?" if that makes any sense |

Re: Does it make u feel good
Yea I don't have that problem to often I guess cause I am a big guy and don't look so friendly I have been told haha so that helps. I will tell people if there serious come check it out and will tell them how much time and money I have put into it and then most of them realize they don't want to pay that much so it works out. If I had to deal with people asking all the time like some of the board members on here run into it would get old fast!

Re: Does it make u feel good
i usually say $6000 and that usually shuts the conversation down immediately----even though i really think the truck IS worth $6000 due to time it would take to find an equivalent stock truck in the same condition and/or bring a truck back up to equivalent condition mine is in.
Let's analyize the type of person that would even ask: Stable vs. less-stable? I.e., job and financial situation. Family situation---divorced/divorced more than once? Smoker vs. non-smoker. Propensity to consume alcohol/propensity to consume in irresponsible volumes. Responsible vs. less-responsible (see above) Better impulse control/more mature vs. lesser impulse control, lesser maturity level. 1) A more stable guy would tend to either buy a new truck or if he is in the market for a used would not feel he would have to solicit cold(due to better impulse control and maturity levels) and would tend to use better methods to locate the used truck----adverstisements etc. a) Is soliciting cold a sign of desperation? 2) i mean i just feel walking up to a complete stranger and to ask if they would like to sell their car WHEN THERE IS NO FOR SALE SIGN or any other obvious signal that they intend to sell just strikes me as not really the right thing to do. (at least introduce yourself first?) 3) Would it not be a better idea(financially) to try to buy from someone who actually wants to sell vs. someone who has no immediate intention to sell? Example: myself who has no intention to sell and therefore wants top $$$ vs. someone who actually wants to sell and would therefore be willing to bargain a little(or alot?). My point again that the cold solicitor tends to be less financially stable than the non-solicitor. Last edited by C-10 simplex; 09-04-2011 at 04:37 PM. |

Re: Does it make u feel good
The way I look at it is simple--If I had the money and saw a car or a truck that I really liked, I would ask if it was for sale or if the owner would be willing to sell it. Many a nice car or truck has been purchased this way--without a "For Sale" sign. Never hurts to ask, you won't lose anything, and some folks are more than willing to sell for the right price.
Got myself a killer '70 Chevelle by asking a kid at a grocery store if his car was for sale.

Re: Does it make u feel good
dang, this topic sure took a left turn !
I've bought and sold many in this manner, I think most people mean it as a compliment when they ask. I've never thought of any as rude or disturb'd for ask'n. my Dually was'nt for sale when I bought it. I ask'd the fella if he was interest'd in sell'n on a friday and drove it home the next day, and have since made a good freind and bought another vehicle from him. I will admitt that all "three" of my Ex wives will agree that I am impulsive, imature, I dont drink or smoke, and my fianacial situation is better than average. think'n about it, 5 out of 8 of my current vehicles were not for sale when I bought em.

Re: Does it make u feel good
I had a guy at a cruise-in pester the living crap out of my about selling my 85.
Every time he saw me he'd ask. I'd say make me an offer, he'd counter with how much do you want.... It was a compliment to have him ask so many times, until he actually shot out a number....which was a total insult! If someone was serious, I'd see it as a compliment.

Re: Does it make u feel good
Asking if the car is for sale is the polite way and I take it as a compliment.
However, walking up to someone and shooting a low ball cash offer at them, or suggesting an inferior car in trade just convinces people that you're an idiot. This is a good way to insult someone.
