BBC timing question

I've got a .030 over 454 with 10:1 compression and a .615 lift cam.
What do I need as far as timing?
I'm running 91 pump gas and I'm conserned about not hearing detonation.
Currently have 18 initial 38 total, all in by 3000RPM.

Re: BBC timing question

Can not see why you would need more than 36 degrees total.

Re: BBC timing question

The big blocks I have run on the dyno all liked 34 degrees of timing the best. I would start there and see how it does.

Re: BBC timing question

I have 20 degrees initial and 16 in the distributor all in by 3000. I use an 850 carb and a Crane solid roller with .636 lift. Big block Chevy 489 cubic inches with Brodix heads. I also agree with 68TT. After all he has run some engines on a dyno and most of us have not. Running 20 degrees advance also solved my cooling problem. With 12 degrees advanced it ran 220 now it runs 180 all day long. I also run 10:1 compression.
