timing ?

anyone out there know off the top of your head what the timing should be on a 75-78 454 ?
I'm thinking the truck I just got running is to advanced its not wanting to start after it gets warmed up

I`m guessing 8 degrees before tdc would be a good starting point...

stock or what ? it does make a difference where you set initial timing 6 plus though for sure .

On line it read 4-6 tdc

The motors just a stock 454
It starts great but when it get warmed up 185-205 it sounds like it's laboring.......has a hard time turning over.....new starter /new battery and new wire to starter and from battery to starter. Good ground.....got to be the timing.

One thing comes to mind...next time its warmed up, when you go to start it have some else start it and watch your starter sinse you have that issue maybe its moving on you and binding up, if not its a timing issue.

I know on my 454 I had to shim the starter to get the gears to mesh right. Another thing to look at is the gage of battery cable going to the starter it needs a big one. Try to add another ground see if that works. Make sure you have a good starter. If it,s a auto parts rebuild it could be bad .
My race truck had this problem because the headers are close to the starter got it to hot. I bought a heat blanket from Nape no more starter problems.

I have my BBC set at 18 -20 deg initial timing + 18 deg mech adv in the distributor for a 36-38 total all in by 3000 rpm, which my cam is not stock........
