locking diff questions

hey guys I have been looking into putting a locking differential in my 79 Chevy with a 12 bold rear end, its two wheel drive and has stock 235/75r15's and I want to add a locker that replaces the spider gears inside the carrier but I was wondering how hard the install would be? Would I need C clip eliminators to install that locker set up? if so is there a cheap reliable way to lock the rear without welding up the spider gears?

here is what i have been looking at but are there any better options?

Re: locking diff questions

looks like an inexpensive unit, says it shouldnt be used with high powere or big tires so if you just have a daily driver that sees occasional light duty im sure it would be fine.

looks like its the same unit as summit sells from richmond gear called Powertrax lock right but ive never heard of a limeted power capability on those?

Re: locking diff questions

Ratcheting lockers get really finicky with un-even tire pressure, slick surfaces etc. I don't know if I would use one in a daily. A True-Trac, clutch-type posi, or hell, even a g-lock would probably be better suited for a light duty daily.

Re: locking diff questions

Well the truck has a 250 straight six I am rebuilding with a few performance mods so I am estimating maybe 200 horsepower I am going to install a 3.73 ring and pinion and go with some sort of locker/posi. The truck is just kind of going to be a work truck when I need it, I have been in places I shouldn’t have working and found out real quick that a locker would be nice, as far as a budget its I don’t really have one I am 18 and have no girlfriend (besides my trucks) and no one that I have to take care of and I am working making plenty of money to save up and buy what I need, so I don’t have a "set budget" on this truck I am just going to get it to the point that its a nice truck and I can use it when I need it

Re: locking diff questions

A posi rear can push you straight a little in snow on hard turns but otherwise no problem. Rain not a problem. I think those are designed to run C-clips. I have used a bunch of posis on the street. They may clunk a little on turns but no big deal.
