Rear five lug??
What are the options on changing the rear to five lug on a 65? There is plenty of info on the front, but I haven't found any on the rear?
I found a old suburban that has a 12 bolt and has 5 lug axles could those axles be a direct fit to the 65? R. Spoke |

You options are, but not limited too.. Finding a read diff from a 71-72 chevy truck. These are pretty much a direct bolt in. I believe CCP sells axles for the 65 rear diff, or you can bring your axles from the 65 to a machine shop and they can redrill them for a 5 lug. The axles in the later model diffs are wider by 3/4 a side. You can also just get 6 lug front rotors.
I searched and searched and found a 72 rear diff for $150.. Good ole craigslist.. This one is $329 and comes with Drums.. http://www.classicperform.com/Store/...k/6569RACK.htm

Thanks for the info.......since the axles are 3/4 in wider could I use the drums and brakes off of the suburban??
I am using the 73--87 complete susp. as I am on a budget and can't afford to buy too many trick parts. Hey I was born in Alameda and lived in Hayward. thanks again |

you can weld on perches to the 73 rear axle to use with your trailing arms, too. i am welding perches on a Caprice rear disc axle.

'94 cop car with open diff from CL for $50. It's a little narrower than the stock, but I don't care. The perches you can get a lot of places, I was going to get mine from Early Classic.
<edit> The Caprice isn't as stout as the 10 bolt, but should be strong enough for my mild 327 build.

You can not use the '71-'82 5 lug axles in the '63-'70 differential housings. The increased length will put the wheel bearing surface in the wrong position. If you have the complete 12 bolt from that Suburban, just buy a set of the trailing arm mounts, and mount it under your truck. But don't forget, you will also have to weld a panhard bar mount on the newer rear end.
If you decide to have your original axles plugged and redrilled, take a good look at the wheel bearing surface. If they are worn and/or pitted, it doesn't make much sense to put much money into them. You can get brand new 5 lug conversion axles for $275-$300.00. Quote:

I got my 5 lug axles made by Dutchman for $255 including studs installed. Very high quality.

Well I guess I might have to keep the 6 lug rear and do the 6 lug disc up front

I had a pair of 70 axles machined 3/4 inch off , remachining the c clip area....cost me 50 bucks
