Noob to air ride

I'm looking to put an air ride kit in my 87 c10 short bed, I would buy a kit but im not looking to spend over 1100. Is it hard to custom fab up your own 4 link system or is it worth it to just buy one. also what are the advantages over an air ride kit rather than just lowering your truck the old fashion way.

Does it last longer, handle better than drop spindles and a flip kit and how difficult is it to do?
