Re: 4x4 swap to a 2wd
I would saaaayy....buy a '73 up 1/2 ton 2wd parts truck, swap the front crossmember into yours and use the 2wd rear springs. If needed you can get 6-lug rotors for the front pretty cheap.

Re: 4x4 swap to a 2wd
Everything you need to do should be feasible without the need for a welder or plasma cutter. It's all bolt on- however getting the factory rivets out will require a grinder and/or drill.
Remember you will be ditching the entire front differential and leaf springs- so if you want to keep it 6 lug, you'll need to get the front suspension x-member off of a 67-70 2wd truck. You can leave the rear in place, but may want to get some lowered springs, drop shackles and/or flip kit to get the ride height correct. Or you can ditch the leaf springs and grab the trailing arms, differential and rear cross members and convert the rear to coil springs. I've never heard of not being able to use the 4wd column in a 2wd conversion, but then again I don't know everything....i'm sure somebody w/ more experience in this will chime in shortly. Good Luck and post up some pics......it's the rules- man!
