Evaporator housing seal? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I removed my leaky A/C evaporator housing in an attempt to reseal it (leaks every time it rains). I've gotten it all cleaned up, but now I need to reseal the two sides and remount them to the firewall. What product should I use to create those seals? RTV? Or is there a specific product for this?

I just did mine up with some silicone adhesive seal. I made sure to put a thick bead on and just laid it up on the firewall. I dunno how it'll hold, but I did a search before I went to town on it, and that's what people were recommending

I went to oriellys and got a role of ribbon strip like they use for installing windshields in early cars. Worked great. Just stretch it to the diameter you want. It is real close to what they used originally.

The box already came sealed, looks like they used a rubberized adhesive (probably similar to the silicone adhesive I used)

they used RTV Black silicone on mine when it was done last

I believe the factory used 3M "Strip Calk" (that's how it's spelled). You can ask for this stuff by name at NAPA..but I think you can get it at pretty much any auto parts store.

It comes in a box & it's basically 12 inch long strips of black, sticky, claylike stuff that you just push into place. Theres a string in the middle of it to keep it from breaking apart. Really easy to work with. It doesn't ooze out & make a mess of things either.

I believe the factory used 3M "Strip Calk" (that's how it's spelled). You can ask for this stuff by name at NAPA..but I think you can get it at pretty much any auto parts store.

It comes in a box & it's basically 12 inch long strips of black, sticky, claylike stuff that you just push into place. Theres a string in the middle of it to keep it from breaking apart. Really easy to work with. It doesn't ooze out & make a mess of things either.

Yes, just knead a few strips together to make a fat strip and install around evap. inlet and outlet. Just did mine with the strip calk, and water tested it with a hose, no leaks

Thanks, installed a new evaporator today and used the 3M stuff, boy that stuff is sticky. Kinda pricey at $23 from oreilly but they give you plenty.
